Less random migrants.

Migrants are too random, I have everything planned out and then a hoard of beekeepers come and drink all the booze and get mad that they don't have proper rooms. I know that you can (sort of) affect how many migrants you get by creating more/less wealth, but then some moody dwarf grabs native platinum and opens up a HFS of unwanted cheesemakers. In this version food is easy to produce, but if that was to change in some later version the difficulty would become very unpredictable, and not in a good way. If migrants required certain conditions to arrive, they would be a lot more manageable.

There should be conditions like 20 pieces of armor = 1 migrant wave, or 5,000☼ worth of glass items = 1 migrant wave. This would also encourage starting up an industry without waiting for a master of it to arrive.

Somewhere along the way this innocent thread about cheese went horribly, horribly wrong.
I'd say it's par for the course. Did you see that crundle thread? That one started out wrong.

Well it's not really random, it's just not the kind of picking you want. The game goes OMG YOU HAVE NO FISH DISSECTORS so it sends a few fish dissectors, even though your on a glacier. Hopefully you will have the ability to outright refuse migrants one day.

What I'd like to see is the ability to request migrants of a particular profession when the outpost liaison (or however the hell you spell that) visits with the dwarven caravan. It would still be somewhat random, but should significantly increase the chances of dwarves with the skills you request turning up.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

All I want is the ability to either tell the mountainhomes that we need no more fishery workers, but would like more metalworkers/warriors/etc, OR the ability to send migrants away (and I know I can just kill them, but a proper migrant disposal device and corpse/ghost disposal require a bit of effort, time, and space that I don't always have). This idea is not all that good; I want to have migrants without making glass when I lack glass, see. However, if you mean "Make X,000 ☼ worth of glass items for Y glassmakers," then yes, I like this idea, EXCEPT that I would need to make armor/weapons/etc to get smiths.

This is an good idea.

I second this idea. Beekeepers! And there never any more miners. I'm currently in a game where I accidentally embarked sans anvil and didn't realise until /after/ the first caravan. I can't make more picks, so I have the one legendary miner mining out rooms for currently 20 dorfs.
