Are bullet hell games out of the question? If not, Ikaruga is brutal. Just. Brutal.

If you consider grinding to be difficult

Sorry but...isn't grinding defined by being more time consuming than difficult?

Depends.  You are a newbie.  You want to make a bed.  Yourself.  From Scratch.  Here's the Wurm Way.

First you cut down 1 tree with newbie axe and chop it into logs
Then you use a carving knife on a log to make a shaft
Then use carving knife on a shaft a few times to make a few handles.
Then you use a carving knife on a log to make kindling.
Then you use a flint and steel on kindling to make a campfire
Then you feed campfire up to 20kg of wood scraps or wood
(logs weigh up to 24kg, you can use more than 20kg if you want)
Then you mine some iron ore and melt it into iron lump in the campfire
(this gives you a quality reduction on the lump because campfires suck for melting)
Then you make a small anvil
Then you use lump on the anvil to make a chisel blade
Then you attach a handle to the blade.  If you fail, start over with a new lump.
If you succeed, you can go on.

Use a newbie pick to mine rocks and a shovel to get clay.
Then you use a chisel on rocks to make bricks.
You then use clay and bricks to make a forge.
You then find more iron ore and melt it in the forge, then make both large and small nails.
Then you grab an axe and cut down a few trees and chop them into logs
Then you use a carving knife to make shafts and a saw to make planks from the logs.
Then you build a headboard from nails, shafts, and planks.
Then you build a footboard from nails, shafts, and planks.
Then you build a bed frame from nails, shafts, and planks.
Then you attach the headboard to the frame to make an unfinished bed
Then you attach the footboard to the unfinished bed.
Then you kill a bear or wolf and get a pelt from it.
Then you add 1KG of fur to the bed three times.
Then you harvest some cotton from your farm (cotton isn't an easy crop either)
Then you use a spindle on the cotton to make threads.
Then you make a loom from threads, planks, nails, and shafts.
Then you make squares of cloth from threads using the loom, and combine them.
Then you make a needle at the forge.
Then you make a sheet by using a needle on the combined squares of cloth.
Then you make a second sheet
Then you add both sheets to the bed.

Bed is finished.  From beginning to end for a newbie character playing 8 hours a day, with no help, probably two full days to make a bed - IF they have a farm nearby where they can get lots of cotton from, and an existing iron vein.  Otherwise counting time to dig out a mine and skill up farming and get enough cotton to make sheets (failing = rags which can't be recycled) probably two weeks.

PM me if you're interested in a download link~

-making a bed-

That seems like a long time, but that's a legitimate motherfucking bed. Seriously. You're in the woods with nothing but an axe. Suddenly, you have a bed. In just two days. If it was me out there, I would settle for a lean-to and a bed of bug infested leaves. Not a Wurm Player, though. He's lost in the woods, so he builds himself an empire.

Yes, logging off by sleeping in a bed gives sleep bonus, a bonus to your skill gains, so beds are good to have :)

When Wurm players get lost in the woods, they generally get eaten by something.  Especially new players.  Most experienced players will have a compass.  Compasses are much easier to make than beds - but you can only harvest the olives to make the oil to make the compass with about once every real life six weeks or so  ;)

It is a difficult thing to find games with real difficulty...but how about the wonderful engineering games at Zachtronics? They are detail oriented, and the later games include concepts that you would encounter in college classes. I reccomend starting with the Codex of Alchemical Engineering (which is a production process design game) or the the Bureau of Steam Engineering (a pressure balance game), then going on to Kohctpyktop (these are the logic gates that make computing possible) and Ruckingenur (a testing and analysis game for the former). SpaceChem requires money, but there is a small demonstration.

If you want real difficulty of a completely different kind, try Metamorphoses (with Gargoyle).

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

Crazy Machines is a good puzzle game, the later puzzles are definitely challenging for me anyway.

Unfortunately it isn't free but it's half price on steam now if the game interests you.

That one's actually pretty easy. I don't see why you'd think it's hard, to be honest.
