What difficulty are we talking about anyway?

In a way the old mario games were the most difficult games, but in a cheap, fake way (hit that invisible 1 tile platform 13,2 seconds after the game starts or start over.. How are you supposed to know that the platform is there? By dying enough times to blindly hit it.)
Same thing with the "Weapon" bosses in FF7. "Let's give a monster 1 million hp" It too was a fake difficulty. The battle with ruby was just LONG.

Caves of Qud, while a nice roguelike, has the "wonderful" RNG. It can result in.. "Take stars down.. 3 chain turrets say game over"

Precisely. That's why I said that ED has the good type of difficulty. Something like I wanna be the guy has lots of bad difficulty - it's
a question of having to memorize each danger, rather than a question of how skillful you are to deal with the danger.

As I said before, right now I'm interested in real difficulty.  Not IWBTG stuff, which I've already beaten already so please stop suggesting it.

I'll give Eternal Daughter a try as well, and here's a fast question:  Would anyone be interested in watching a Nuzlocke challenge on any pokemon game that gets the highest popular vote outside of Black and White?  I've been wanting to try and do an LP for a while now and a Nuzlocke would be pretty interesting to do.

Bonesaw is pretty good about that junk, although the ball puzzles again are just stupid and probably deserve their own category of fake difficulty. Everything else except the last world is pretty straightforward, the last world getting a bit of grief for leaps of faith off the side of the screen.

Not really. Just get lucky with the RNG.

I've had a lot of luck with an attractive, social adequate, white male born into a lower-middleclass family in a developed country with high INT and specialisation in Science.

When you get into high school just spam Study and get into the uni dungeon and from there you're set.
Avoid the commited relationship option unless you're sure it's not cursed.

Buy the latest Humble Bundle. Between Hammerfight and VVVVVV you get some challenging games for whatever you feel like paying.

I know it's a longshot, but if you have a Gamecube or Wii (they're backward compatible, right?) track down F-Zero GX. So fun, so frustrating. This is one of the middle story mode levels on Normal difficulty. Now imagine Very Hard difficulty.

Oh GOD I hated that level on harder difficulties. I don't think I could ever beat it on Very Hard.

I tip my hat to you sir. That game did not fuck around when it came to "Very Hard" difficulty. I had to stop playing not because I was bored of it, but because it was causing me emotional duress.

  You might try Wurm Online, and try to live in the wilderness as a hermit as a free player 

  You can play for free as long as you like, but your skills are limited and your abilities as well.

  If you consider grinding to be difficult, and don't mind doing it, Wurm is the most insane skillgrind game ever designed.  I believe the last character wipe was 5 years ago or so, and there are a grand total of two players who have ever maxxed any skills at all.  One person maxxed digging, another has maxxed tracking.

    If you want to do PVP, there is a PVP server, full loot, towns can be destroyed and homes looted, combat allows aimed shots.  Expect to spend a lot of time grinding to make your own character a reasonable fighter, but characters can be bought and sold and the developer doesn't mind at all, so a passable fighter can be found for a few dozen euros if you look around.

  I'm actually probably going to be headed back to Wurm in a few weeks myself, I typically play a few months on, then a few months off.  I'm looking forward to seeing what the new skeletal animation avatars are going to be like when they are released.

  Of all the MMO's I've ever played, the only one that was harder than Wurm was Entropia, and Entropia was only harder because the entire game was a gambling session rigged for you to slowly lose, rather than a work-for reward system.
