What about some good old 8-bit games? Or any remake of that games.

Some of you may gasp, but Starcraft 1's campaign (both original and expansion) can be quite challenging if you don't use some silly guide.

Of course, I don't know if you're going for that kind of difficulty. But if you haven't played too many RTSs it should be quite the challenge.
Fuck that one Protoss mission where you have to kill the enemy force of Protoss.

They have arbiters and you do not.

 It hurts.

The SC:BW campaigns are even more painful. That final zerg mission oh my god

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

I can't believe nobody said IWBTG.

I never made it past the third screen.

SWAT 2. Actually complete the objectives as a terrorist instead of running away.

Note that it's only actually hard because of how broken the game is.

If you're looking into game mods at all, I can advise Zelda: Parallel Worlds romhack for LoZ:Link to the Past. That is surprisingly challenging, and has a decent backstory to it too.

Play Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul and attempt the first dungeon. The mod creator felt we needed to be 'taught a lesson' in going backwards through an empty dungeon rather than fight a boss.

yup,
option 1: start level, find enemy leader, whack his skull in with your hero.
option 2: start level, summon gold/shadow dragons, roast enemy leader

AoW2 was a lot harder, mostly because magic skill reset every 3 levels. Also shadow magic had a nice epic last level (involving many top tier enemies getting shot by my arsenal of cannons).

N+ for the PSP became very hard after a few levels.

The PC version is free.

I found Halo: Reach on legendary difficulty to be brutal.

Eternal Daughter.

It's got beautiful graphics and incredible sound. It has a moving plot and does not involve any fake difficulty. It is also brutal and will beat you to a pulp.

Final boss in that game is damn near impossible to beat, mostly because he has an undodgeable attack he likes to use a lot. I think there was some trick to keep him from using it, though.

What difficulty are we talking about anyway?

In a way the old mario games were the most difficult games, but in a cheap, fake way (hit that invisible 1 tile platform 13,2 seconds after the game starts or start over.. How are you supposed to know that the platform is there? By dying enough times to blindly hit it.)
Same thing with the "Weapon" bosses in FF7. "Let's give a monster 1 million hp" It too was a fake difficulty. The battle with ruby was just LONG.

Caves of Qud, while a nice roguelike, has the "wonderful" RNG. It can result in.. "Take stars down.. 3 chain turrets say game over"

"Pure" difficulty doesn't resort to cheap tricks, insane numbers or rng world creation. Difficulty =/= luck, cheap shots, bs.. Or am i wrong here?
