I'm looking for a decent game with high difficulty and if possible, a passable story.  I've already played and beaten I wanna be the Guy, I've done a few runthroughs of ADOM and Nethack, and generally I'm looking for something new and fun.

I want a CHALLENGE though with preferably actual difficulty instead of stuff like what IWBTG has.  Anyone have anything like that?  Muds, Moos, freeware, browser games...anything would work if it's free and difficult.

EDIT:  Adding this as well.  Any challenge runs of any game that isn't a Roguelike is welcome too.  Preferably something interesting though instead of generic challenges like singe class, single character, "use piece of shit character #23" etc...

Have you played Super Meat Boy? It starts out mildly gentle, but the later stages are just painful and cruel. Not because of IWBTG-style gotchas, but because you see exactly what you have to do, but now you have to do it.

Dungeon Crawl stone soup is pretty challenging, with a very broad choice of races and classes and ye olde roguelikeness. Also has a tiles version if you prefer that.

There's also VVVVVV, a challenging plataformer that isn't unfair hard, just challenging.

I'd like to suggest Super Meat Boy but I've been beaten to it.

As for free games you might want to give Nikujin a go. It's pretty difficult to say the least and I suggest you read the page I linked to if you plan on playing. The game is Japanese but luckily it's low on text except the manual isn't and the article covers what you need to know. As it's low on text it's also low on story but that shouldn't be a problem. It's a mad platformer and one of the few games that left me feeling like a ninja.
