[Request] DF Video Let's Play on a difficult embark.
« on: July 30, 2011, 11:02:44 am »

There are plenty of DF LPs on youtube, but they're all pretty much the same; find the most desirable location and build, build, build, or laden with tutorial information. What I have yet to see, though, is a difficult embark; cold/freezing weather, sparse vegetation, evil surroundings, maybe missing some important resources or containing an aquifer.

Is there a dwarf out there brave enough to accept this challenge?

I accept your challenge.  I will post a few soon.

EDIT: Palacehushed, Terrifying Swamp

I've started a very difficult embark for this Let's Play.  Dwarfing will be allowed, suggestions may be made, and Fun will definitely be had.  It's not even the end of Year One, and we're already a mess.

tilesets are ew.  Real dwarves don't use those weird gyberish pictures!

ive gotten in the habit of replacing my chief medical dwarf as soon as he gains any notable skill in diagnosis.
It's really funny watching them do unnecessary surgery because of a wrong diagnosis.
the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

No. Real dwarves learn all of the tilesets and the ASCII, because it's inefficient and you probably won't use all of it anyway.

I'll alternate between phoebus and no tilesets, since I use both.  I frequently use Phoebus for community stories (so the story is more accessible to casual players), and ASCII for non-story forts (since I find it fun sometimes to use the game as-is)

Hrm.  I spent all night uploading the first video; removed for being too long.  Oh well; I guess I'll try again today.

Since I am NOT going to restart my fortress just to record an intro, here's the deal:  Embarking in a Terrifying Swamp/Marsh (two overlapping biomes), one shallow metal in each biome, aquifer, and a slightly minimal build.  I only brought ore for smelting into ONE suit of steel armor, wood to burn for the job, some rocks to build a wall, two dog and chickens, some seeds, picks, a single copper axe, and 60 units of drink and 30 units of meat.

Starting seven: axedwarf, doctor, three miners, smith, and a peasant.
