Tricking People Through the Power of Dwarf Fortress
« on: July 30, 2011, 01:46:01 am »

I recently posted on my Facebook that "I have relapsed into the insane world of booze again". It has been a couple of months since I fired up DF and posting this has been hilarious. People think I'm an alcoholic and do shrooms now, but i'll make sure they know I was  talking about a game soon. Share your stories of when people thought you where insane or something because you where talking about DF.

"Stop biting the elephant, he might get mad!"
I was in a break between 2 classes and I went to a public computer room to play DF.

I actually screencapped the combat report when it happened.

"OH GOD THE CAMELS ARE COMING"

...unfortunately, everyone in the room knew the context.

Every carp and elephant joke. I make them regularly, regardless of whether the present company understands.

My DnD character is afraid of carp, elephants, and giant spiders, but will readily fight anything else, regardless of size or danger. I would play a dwarf, but my friends refuse to have their characters carry that much booze for me. They only vaguely understand why I want that much booze.

I accidently make normal references to mushroom wine and big, purple, edible mushrooms, forgetting they don't actually exist. (Strictly the ones from DF; there is actual mushroom wine.)

I once started shouting at my computer, as my best axedwarf decided to sleep outside during a siege. The computer is basically in the middle of the house. Plenty of odd looks directed toward me.

And, of course, many people think I'm insane because I play this game. It's mainly the ASCII.

You shouldn't mess with platypodes. If they kick you, you're gonna be in a whole world of pain.

A friend at work and I share 'moments' from our respective games of interest.

He tried DF once, but is more into visual aspects than me.

Anyway, try describing ANY moment of DF violence/alcoholism/suicide/stock management/etc in front of the secretary and wonder why they are scared of you the rest of the day...

Because DF players are heavily into pain.

I talk about badgers incessantly, and I figure it must be getting on my family's nerves by now.

That didn't last long, huh? Shame, cause binary's cool. Anyway, an important message: I will be changing my names on every username based thing I use to ASCIt on/around 10/1. Consolidating, I guess you could say.

"Hey, how're you doing?"
"I admired a fine floor lately."
"What?"
"I ate a sublime mushroom roast lately."
"...huh?"
"I decided not to cut the grass, there was a dead firefly under the carport."
"Is this one of those..."
"Also I vomited when I went past the window."
"...nevermind."

At least one pal of mine after decided I was insane after he showed me some of his carp-fishing pictures and I burst out laughing.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

Truly he is a great man if he survived the onslaught.

Something about a vile force of darkness. People thought it was one of those emo phases.
