Damn it, this came up in my Steam queue and now I'm sitting here dithering over $10. I love how it seems to have so deeply affected people in a positive way, a flawed creation of undeniable gooey-gooey fun and ephemeral weirdness. Some Steam reviews both good and bad make it sound like you need to be mentally unbalanced to work through the user unfriendliness though. Is that still true or is the game user friendly to the point where it's just a fugly UI, a bad translation and some mean mechanics?

it's not a bad translation, apparently the game makes no sense and has terrible/nonsensical dialog even in the original french.

There's a really comprehensive fan translation patch out there that fixes the murky dialogue problems entirely. Other than that, it's a fun shooty game with some techy bits, just don't expect hacking to be fun, ever. Also, be sure to turn research to as cheap as possible, there's no real reason not to.

I thought the absurd dialogue fit fine in the game. The whole time I just had a surreal feeling about this, not knowing what the fuck was going on - which fits into the whole theme of far-future weirdness.

The problem with the default translation is it's sort of a google translate thing, which sort of makes it feel like a "surreal parody" flavor of weird. The actual weirdness comes from the plot itself and what you've learned by the end of the game(s). I was really missing out on the second one due to the overwhelming engrish in the first, and I think it'd be a shame if others missed out on the plot-based mindscrews while tripping over the translation-based mindscrews which are nowhere near as good.

Funny, it never occurred to me translation is bad. No, seriously, I can't remember a part where I was like "Huh?". Then again, this might be because I'm not a native English speaker.

Also nenjin, if you are interested, you can PM me and we can try some MP E.Y.E. goodness.

Oh, definitely try single player first. I suggest going through it multiple times, with multiple characters. MP is just for added insanity.

I like the fact that all the weapons are good enough to kill most enemies. Even the basic knifeLIGHTNING EXPLOSION KATANA.

Did you know that the basic smg(not the stealth one) has an alt fire mode that doubles the rate of fire?
I played through 5 times (once more than necessary) to get the final "ending", and never noticed this haha.

But for all the bugs and issues, its still a much needed coop game thats really enjoyable to play with people...
Also, its very system-shock....
VERY system-shock...
This is true!  The parts of SS2 I really liked were all here.  Freaky monsters, atmosphere, and mortality for you and the enemy (though not counterstrike-level, just enough time to dive for cover and choose a tactic).

Sadly my friends didn't enjoy the game nearly as much as I did, but we did play a few levels co-op.  Works better co-op, like almost any game, but I certainly didn't find it necessary.  In fact certain levels probably work better alone, rather creeped out.  Particularly when you come across an NPC.  It's nice to take some time to translate their uncanny language.  Heck, the bad translation actually increased immersion for me slightly - the entire game felt off, sometimes a lot and sometimes a little.  Which was actually appropriate, based on some late-game... "revelations"?

Everything is so unclear, which leaves a lot up to the imagination.  Which only works because there's a lot of dialog to puzzle over, and because almost none of it is lazy nonsense.  Almost every sentence almost makes sense, and overall there's a feeling that understanding is, always, just out of reach.  That's some good atmosphere.

Yeah, I'm replying to 3-year-old posts just to share my fond experiences with the game (;  I'm working my way through the thread from the start.

Edit:  Oh, all caught up now.  Makes sense since I never noticed this on the first page of Other Games before.  I almost said the music in SS2 was better, but then I listened to some of the E.Y.E OST
New Eden: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ2tWPjar1M

I'm only remembering a certain track from SS2 because I keep replaying the first deck every few months, heh.

Startrek online is an interesting case of a MMO kind of saving itself.

First time around was a blind run, & I tried sneaking around, pacifism & hacking everything (shudders).
I did not know how to play this game.

Holy crumbug, this is only a 10 page thread?!

If you want to min/max, dump cash into augments rather than research, as skills have soft caps which augments don't effect but research does. More info
That said, get the healy research asap.
GET TURRETS FOR 'DEFEND THIS SPOT' OBJECTIVES. You'll probably still lose them but the devs know that and it's sometimes intentional.

I agree with the translation being fine. If anything it's a feature.

Man, I was gonna post this after the mention earlier.  I love that SMG, it's my favorite gun in the game.  Shame it's worthless after a few levels, once enemies get armor.

Gonna jump on the HS 010 love train. Because seriously, I LOVE this gun if just for the sound it makes in alternative fire mode. No, really, the sound, the SOUND, man.

Or Caw Hammer. Dear Armok, that thing sounds like a miniature hand cannon. Or a truck hitting your sorry skull full speed head-on. Or, well, a hammer.

And I never even got around to buying the actual assault cannon.

Huge anti-material sniper and hand-cannon ftw.

I never did find the research for that damned hammer.
