You can; however, you won't necessarily. You can also be hacked, or suffer no consequences at all. I heard it had something to do with your karma level, but I'm not sure if that's true. I also suspect that your firewall level (under cybertech) and hacking skill, while not a guarantee to save you, do help prevent the negative consequences, but I can't say I fully understand the mechanics. Sometimes it's best to just cancel the hack if you think it's going to go poorly.

I failed a hack against a turret (don't laugh! My Hack skill was like 20) and it didn't kill me. It instead obstructed my vision with a semi-transparent neon blinking emoticon, greatly reduced my accuracy (scoped snipes landing WAY wide) and IIRC, prevented me from reloading. I thought this was what happened regularly, but maybe there's a whole slew of possible effects.

You have to hack yourself to get rid of that.

Which is kind of a funny concept.

Yeah, there's the possibility of getting counter-hacked when you fail a hack.  There's the enemy mucking you up with the smiley virus, which requires you to debug by hacking yourself, or the much more version of them using Destroy on you, which apparently bypasses your reanimators and everything, and goes straight to "nope mission failed".

Blargh I was on the story first mission, having bypassed a monster-infested garage without alerting any of them and stomping through a horde of looters, only to (repeatedly) fail to hack a buncha turrets and get my cybernoggin melted and everything invalidated.  Not cool.

...To be fair, it's probably the game's way of telling me "your character only has 17 hacking, stop trying to be a hacker".  And it's completely possible to avoid any consequences if you close the hack menu before you fail.

There's also the after-death mutilations thing, permanent penalties to stuff after dying.  That kinda sucks.  Apparently those are removable after researching... something, but AFAIK it's impossible even with money or stuff otherwise.  My first one was because I was rushing trying to get back to the random mission hall, and fell into one of the billion death pits the temple's built over.  240 meters is a long way for my 80% speed-malus'd self :<

Head of Secreta: Are those bridges suspended over... death pits?

Architect: No, they're poorly lit bridges suspended over death pits. With no railings!

Head of Secreta: I love it. Perfect for a headquarters.

If you pay attention, they are virtual bridges created by the rings. There are sections with zero support besides the computer-cgi-wireframe inside the rings on both sides.

I was on a solid stone bridge.  Well, not bridge... more like a little pathway, in a separate room, away from the stores and stuff, going back to the mission room.  In the room, a bunch of floor was missing, replaced with death pit.

I don't, as a rule, play shooters.

This game still looks awesome though...

Probably won't work on this computer anyhow.

That looks... like my comp almost qualifies... Will edit with specs.

EDIT:
XP Home
P4 3.0GHz
(how do you check RAM again?)
120G free
ATI X300 (I think it has 128 MB and Shader 2.0, but only barely)
DX9.0c I think
Sound card works fine
Internet connection

...huh, might work. I need a new graphics card, this one is ancient...

It runs Gmod though... barely...

Think it will work?

Ah, good. I can, just barely, run Gmod on the lowest settings. or Portal. Portal 2 crashes every other level though.

Man I am having a good time with this game.  :)

It feels like it has just the right amount of hectic panic moments and calm methodical moments.  Yesterday I managed to escape a bunch of enemy squads when I was exhausted and almost dead by hiding in a bathroom.  I spent a few mins in there using my medkit and recovering my energy while hacking into some of the nearby squad members, forcing them to fight each other.  Once my energy recovered, I enabled my stealth field and snuck out past them to a safer area.

So much fun.  :)

Looks like a patch is out. Just look at that changelog. Hopefully I'll be able to run it on max settings without sporadically crashing on load now...

I'm glad.  Although I've finished the game on the hardest difficulty so I'm not sure what else to do at this point.
