Dwarf Ranch
« on: July 29, 2011, 05:53:52 pm »

Okay, so I started by setting the population limit to about 12. The I decided to build mostly above ground (minus a small mine for iron, basements for food storage and growth and possibly a small shaft to the caverns so I can say that I've managed it). I had a small house and everything. Then all of a sudden, I get a whole bundle of building destroyers on the map and all hell breaks loose as they come at my ranch and bulldoze everything.

What. The. Hell.
They weren't even aware of my ranch or the dworfs, what happened? Did my dworfs discover neon and build a sign when I wasn't looking? Was there a fire I wasn't aware of? Perhaps a telegram went out to all the local giant everythings?

Please explain.
Very much appreciated.

J.

Giant wasps and giant flys from the flora and fauna mod.

Titans and other megabeasts have a population & wealth limit. Once you pass a certain number of people or a certain fort value, they'll start making beelines for your fort.  Can't remember what the values are, the wiki has it.

Wait, it was modded megabeasts?  Check the mod raws and see what the values are. Most animal mods that I've seen put the megabeast-attack triggers pretty low.

Most certainly not megabeasts. These were normal, run of the mill building destroyers, which I can understand. The issue I have is the fact that they magically knew where my stuff was. That's just unnatural.

Like, from a evolutionary point of view, if their main hunt is dworfs then certainly as a surface species they would have died out ages ago?

Ahhh...I see...building destroyers head straight for stuff they can destroy--it is actually the basis for numerous building destroyer traps--e.g. the good ol' door-to-nowhere with cage trap 2 tiles away to capture giant cave spiders or the armor stand+cave-in/spike F.B. gauntlet of death.

Were these beasts tier 2 buildng destroyers? Tier 1 BDs will only destroy if somethings in their way, tier 2 wil activly seek things to wreck. iirc

So they can smell the cut timber of a door, but not the cut timber of a cage trap?

And Ultra, these things appeared at the edge of the map and headed straight for my stuff, killed five of my dworfs and vanished when most everything was destroyed.

It's... uh... how the game works? Not sure what you want us to say. Building destroyers are intent on solely destroying constructed buildings, however surreal it may come off as.

It's like the Dwarven Sock Sence. Just like your dwarves will drop everything in the middle of a enemy seige and dodge arrows to get that one sock, The Building destroyer MUST get to that door and smash it, come FUN or High water encrusted with forgotten beast slime.

Mostly, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one. I never had it happen before. Other than that, I'm just engaging and validating the opinions of those people who've taken the time to reply.

Protip, if you want a peaceful ranch, don't embark in a savage area.

If those bees and wasps are non-savage, then... uhh... I don't know what to say.

No idea, I forgot to check... Silly me :P
Anyway, along with the ranch, I have decided to actually make the neon sign or at least signal fires. Several bins filled with lignite blocks burning should do it.

I'm sorry, I really couldn't resist. Anyway, I recommend building a wall. most things can't pass walls. Maybe a roof as well.
