Yeah, I know. This has been happening to images every once in a while since the forum upgrade, and as far as I can tell, whenever it decides to happen, it can't be fixed by any means available to me.

being the stubborn-ass conservative man I am, I support the death penalty. OP sums up my feelings rather well.

Against

Reason 1: So called "wrongful executions" where goverments uses it to get rid of people who talks a lot. Which have happened in my country during the military coup. At least it proved that communists, socialists, leftist won't be scared off because of death penalty.
Reason 2: Real wrongful executions. Some have claimed that as many as 39 executions have been carried out in the U.S. in face of compelling evidence of innocence or serious doubt about guilt
Reason 3: Evidence of stopping potential criminals from committing murder is fragile. A study comparing Hong Kong, a city-state without the death penalty, and Singapore, a city-state that uses the death penalty frequently and swiftly, and has a similar culture and murder rate to Hong Kong

Agreeing to kill a murderer won't make you any different from him.

Did you check out some of the execution methods? Stoning people to death, an electrical chair incident who didn't kill the criminal and just burned him.

Some of the info (about studies) is taken from wikipedia.

I voted "no", because while it's conceivable that a situation could come up where I think it might be the correct course of action, it would be so rare, and the cost of maintaining a legal apparatus that could handle it in what I think a viably ethical manner so high, that I just don't find it to be practical. In short, there are corner cases where I'd find it acceptable, but they aren't worth the impossible effort to allow. Failing to put forth that effort would be unacceptable.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

rape is something that scars people for life sometimes, but at least they didn't kill you.

I've seen people say that Rape is worse then killing and while I can understand the concept I fully believe it is something that should be removed from our society.

Treating people as "Damaged goods who might as well be dead" because someone did something horrible to them is an archaic view in light of all we know about psychology or even just people in general. It is also a harmful viewpoint and one that stems from subversive sexist views.

I personally don't believe in Capital Punishment. It just seems like revenge especially given that capital punishment is usually viewed by others.

I wouldn't support the electric chair or stoning, or anything along those lines. That's more like torture than it is execution.

I'm a supporter of capital punishment, I actually wouldn't mind seeing it increased slightly to help deal with the prison overload. I view it as waste though, they should be used for scientific experimentation. Then they could at least be of some use to humanity instead of being parasites. At the very least it should be made optional for them.

I doubt this post is going to make me very popular... heh

I agree with you Grim, No sense in killing someone in that situation without the rest of humanity benefiting.

Basically if the government is to decide who should be killed, why can't I. If that guys really, really wronged me, for instance shoot my beloved, beloved Chihuahua, he should die, no. Because my Chihuahua is like my child, and therefore he killed my child, and therefore he should die, you understand?

NO. Killing is off limits. Not you, not the government, no one have the right to kill.
You have the right to employ reasonable force to defend yourself and other. And if the worse is to come, a side effect may be that the attacker is killed. BUT YOU WAY NOT KILL PURPOSELY.

That's the effect I want by forbidding death penalty. Engrave in the country's culture that murder is off limits. Life in prison in special case should be all that is needed to deter criminals.

My solution to the prison overload would to arrest fewer people and socialize the prison system. Privatizing it was a bad idea. As for the science thing... it really, really depends on the experiment. If it's suspected that there's a significant chance of a slow, agonizing death or similarly nasty side effect, no. We don't torture people to death, no matter how useful the data might be or how much the person might seem to deserve death. If you couldn't test it on volunteers, you can't test it on prisoners.

BUT YOU WAY NOT KILL PURPOSELY.

Well, I think hot blooded situations and survival homicide are exceptions, but the general idea is there. No man, no collective has the right to pick and choose who lives and who dies.

You are aware that the prison overload likely isn't for crimes that would recieve capital offenses right? Thus it wouldn't affect the prison overload.

Though I don't know much about that subject...

I do know that Capital Punishment is apperantly, though I have no flippen idea how, expencive.
