Now, now, the chance of actually mining the earth into anything approaching a husk is ludicrous. We have little in the way of ability to cause any real geological change to our planet that won't be reverted or completely ignored in what amounts to a geological eyeblink - and if we don't use it now, the people who come after us will! If we do use it now - they'll find something else, and STILL probably live more comfortably than we do. Believe it or not, we have a whole crapton of excess productivity potential to go around. The Earth running out of mineable resources would actually be a potentially great thing, since it would push us out into currently unexplored and unexploited avenues (like space exploration and utilization) that would, finally, have a chance of being profitable.
And while we may spend an unseemly amount of time and money converting persons into corpses, we don't come anywhere close to the relative (or even absolute) numbers we were managing just 50 to 100 years ago.
Are things messed up? Sure. Are there people, on both sides, seemingly intent on making it worse? Absolutely.
But empires rise and fall, and just because things change doesn't mean they'll end up worse (though transition is often incredibly painful!)
And as to the kids, well - adversity can be more of a boon that some might think, if a person is suitably equipped to overcome it.
My point:
It's pretty bad, but its not the end of the world. We may be taking a step (or two or three) back, but that doesn't negate the multitude of steps forward we've taken.
It's certainly not a reason not to have kids!
