I will accept an impeachment of Obama for saving this country if it leads to the end of the fascist neo feudal republican traitors who are trying to destroy America.

Sorry you don't like being vilified day in and day out. Feel free to become part of the problem if it frustrates you.

Rational discourse does not work on them.

Perhaps shocking their sensibilities with the truth will.

Are you suggesting that I am not going far enough?

He's pointing out you can't complain of being villified if you do the same to others.

I am speaking an uncomfortable truth. My priorities of saving my nation supersede my desire to avoid offending its enemies.

Please note: I am not talking about moderate republicans, they are ok in my book.

Heh, or there is an alternative to doing a questionably constitutional maneuver by the president: http://www.slate.com/id/2300428/
It would seem the treasury, while it can't print unlimited bills, it can print coins in as large a denomination as it wants. Bam, $5 trillion without raising the debt ceiling. Just don't walk into a restaurant with it and ask for change.

While we're all engaged in an US vs. them mentality - which I may add is pretty much the entire Republican political strategy; wedge issues to distract people from actually doing anything - the planet will continue to be mined out into an empty husk while we fight over the remaining resources, the poor will continue to be ignored or worst - pillaged and profited off of, and we'll continue to invest $1.24 trillion US into killing each other.

And people wonder why I don't want to bring my own children into this world. ::)

Agreed.  We need as much united concern as we have anger.  If we could work on that, we might be surprised to reach a point where we have nothing to be angry about.

Now, now, the chance of actually mining the earth into anything approaching a husk is ludicrous. We have little in the way of ability to cause any real geological change to our planet that won't be reverted or completely ignored in what amounts to a geological eyeblink - and if we don't use it now, the people who come after us will! If we do use it now - they'll find something else, and STILL probably live more comfortably than we do. Believe it or not, we have a whole crapton of excess productivity potential to go around. The Earth running out of mineable resources would actually be a potentially great thing, since it would push us out into currently unexplored and unexploited avenues (like space exploration and utilization) that would, finally, have a chance of being profitable.

And while we may spend an unseemly amount of time and money converting persons into corpses, we don't come anywhere close to the relative (or even absolute) numbers we were managing just 50 to 100 years ago.

Are things messed up? Sure. Are there people, on both sides, seemingly intent on making it worse? Absolutely.

But empires rise and fall, and just because things change doesn't mean they'll end up worse (though transition is often incredibly painful!)

And as to the kids, well - adversity can be more of a boon that some might think, if a person is suitably equipped to overcome it.

My point:
It's pretty bad, but its not the end of the world. We may be taking a step (or two or three) back, but that doesn't negate the multitude of steps forward we've taken.

It's certainly not a reason not to have kids!

Energy resources used at current consumption will last the world two generations or less without innovations or cutbacks and at its current rate of growth.

And thus we will innovate, as we have always done, or we will become more efficient, as we are doing anyways, and likely both. In the worst case, those in the US cease to live quite so opulently, but certainly don't end up all that terribly off (at least for that reason! There's still plenty else that could bring us low, of course)

And when you say two generations.... do you mean, like, two lifespans? Or like 40 years? Or what. Its a very vague term.

And I don't think the amount of mineable resources inside the planet is as much of an issue as the fragility of the environment on the surface (or rather our dependence on a certain state of the environment to support large-scale civilization) and how our process of literally turning the planet inside out is going to effect that.

My worlds problems are so large...
My nations problems are so large...
My families problems are so large...
I want to fix them all, but there is so little that I can do. I don't have the wealth, I don't have the energy.

As someone with an engineering background, I see the worlds resource problems more easily than I see solutions for the political problems facing my nation. I can see elevating the energy production of the world so that everyone has the same energy supply as the average American, a combination of solar and nuclear power linked by a revitalized power grid. With current solar technology we could double or more the worlds energy supply with a square of desert 200 miles on a side filled with solar thermal power plants. All of the other "how do we give 7 billion people the same standard of living as the western world?" problems can be solved with modern technology as well.

I can not however even begin to understand how to fix the political problems with my nation. All I know is that i need to do something and that being considerate and accommodating  has not worked. I don't know what to do anymore, but I know I can not be silent.
