Weeping Angels
« on: July 29, 2011, 03:33:54 pm »

Those of you who have watched Doctor who should rejoice.

It would be so cool if dwarf fortress had a "Weeping angel" like creature that invaded your fort...Slowly.

For those who haven't watched Doctor Who, a Weeping Angel is a reature that is real only when you are not observing it. When you look at it, its just a weird statue...But then you blink...And it moves...And its fast... Yeah, that's the basic idea. And if it toutches a dwarf/anone when it isnt observing it(IE, when its asleep unconcious or just unaware etc) the dwarf just diapears. I know, its a bit too much like the film but I would TOTALLY love that.

How would this work though? Dwarves are looking in all directions at all times right now... hell I don't think the game even tracks facing or line of sight.

They would move only when nobody is near. Also, if you can staab people in the back from the rear then I guess it does...

A night creature along those lines would be terrific in adventure mode... except there too you just look in all directions.

The concept of the Weeping angel is hardly new. For example the ghosts in Mario function by the exact same premise (that they cannot move when observed)

It is basically a disguised creeper who only can move when your back is turned.

How they would function in Fortress mode I guess is they would be ambushers who appear as something harmless or impossible until they are in striking distance at which point they will still appear to be harmless. THOUGH it should be fully possible for the player to metagame and assign them to be killed even if they havn't been found out.

In adventure mode it could only possibly work indoors because Adventurers see in 360 vision.

Oh yeah! I never thought about the ghosts in mario! I think that they should be something hard or unkillable while observed. Like a statue or a tree or a rock. You should have the ability to somehow destroy them but it should be hard.

It would be cool if they turned into statues and the statues actually had some weird description like "It is pointing in your direction" or something...

They could just be called "Creeping Statues" who hide when observed by standing perfectly still.

They could also be fleshy I guess and turn into the stone statues for protection as well as enhanced hiding ability similar to some other creatures (Tanuki could do it for example)

But they don't really REALLY do that for stealth.

*sigh*

I know they would make an awsome encounter... You walk inside a wizard tower and find a room lined with statues who come to life and attack you.
