I like supporting GoG because they do go through the trouble of making the games work (even if that means packing dosbox along) and give you a lot of extras that can be interesting. Specially when it's the game's OST.
What seriously!? That changes my opinion of them instantly.

I do agree that torrents can be a good way for others than myself to know what to buy. But they're also proliferated by the people who will always be there: the cheapo preteen who can't get mommy to buy him the game.
Yup. They make sure the game will work on vista/7. They also remove DRM and make sure you won't need to deal with it. They also scan every manual, map, notes, everything they can find and package it along with the game. So when you buy a game you -at least- get the PDF version of the manual. Here's an example, this is what comes with Fallout 2 when you buy it from GoG:

    manual (166 pages)
    Fallout series wallpaper
    HD wallpaper
    Fallout Bible (205 pages)
    reference card
    original soundtrack
    5 Vault Boy avatars
    13 avatars
    2 artworks

All in digital format, of course. But still quite nice of them.

As for the torrenting thing, well, the whiny boy wouldn't be able to buy the game anyway, so it makes no difference whether he has downloaded it or not. Most of us, on the other hand, either are on limited budget or don't trust developers enough nowadays, so we use it to test the game before buying it.

I sort of dislike this view on certain subjects. Even when I have more money then I can deal with I strongly consider whether or not I am getting a good deal.

Oh, me too. I happen to have made quite a lot of money recently but it's not like I'm gonna blow it on something if I don't feel it's worth it.

The reason I included that is that's the primary demographic of people that I personally KNOW that torrent games, plus it's the one the publishers tend to target, no matter how imaginary (the ones who would theoretically buy the game if they had money but torrent it due to some situation or regardless. You could say that the whiny boy WOULD have bought the game, but just not at that point, but that is negated because he certainly wouldn't after torrenting, so by some points of view that's a lost sale?). I'm sure most people who do that aren't like that, and many of them are just trying out the game.

To clarify, I don't think publishers will gain anything from going after the whiny kid because other than not really losing a sale in most situations there seems to be an infinite amount of broke, cheap, whiny kids that will always torrent games.

As for torrents, I've only ever really torrented stuff that's already free and would be slower to do direct-download. Like Linux distributions.

Which is, by the way, perfectly legal and ethical.

Why does everyone think peer-to-peer = illegal?

Copyright-violating stuff can be direct-downloaded too...

I don't really know, that's one of the things I have a problem with. Anyway, sorry for contributing to this derail so much.

Back on topic, Alpha Centauri is only 6 dollars. Is it worth it for a ginormous civ fan? Do you get to explore multiple planet types?

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, a Civ fan who has never played it? I like it more than most (any?) Civ games. No you do not get to explore multiple planet types.

The game is most similar to Civ 2 I think but covers a lot of new territory. It includes unit design, actual terriforming (raising/lower land), cities in the ocean, and one of the best super weapons in any game ever.

It has some issues, it is from before the time of cultural borders so the computer can (and will) place down a base within 3 squares of your own and steal your resources. I think it is a must for any Civ fan willing to look past the dated issues.

Heh, thanks Fikes. I wasn't alive in Civ II's time but it's probably my favorite (or would have been if it had the cool wandering barbarians and animals and such that Civ IV had). I'm buying it right now, I don't care about the "issues" much (all part of the game, and besides if someone steals MY resources I will just blow their heads off)

EDIT: I now possess Alpha Centauri and for some reason can play a cool game called Tyrian 2000 for free. THANK YOU GOG.COM.

I love GOG. I've bought so many games from them, all but one work nearly perfectly on Win 7 64-bit. (Interstate 76 hates me, even with fixes, but runs alright in Virtual PC.)

Master of Magic is still amazing after all these years. And Planescape: Torment. And Privateer. And Master of Orion.

They even have Magic Carpet.

Well, Alpha Centauri didn't work out of the box on win7 (had to run in 640x480 or it crashed on my netbook, had to run in 256 colors) but it's all working now. E: Hmm, no that doesn't work. The colors are still messed up (for example, wonky wrong-colored cursor like when I run D2 in windowed mode). Can I run AC in windowed mode?

EDIT2: I have been searching for HOURS. Screw you, GOG. Alpha Centauri does not work "out of the box" even with your custom installer.

1) With no compatibility options on, it just crashes. (The instruction at etc can't be referenced yadda yadda)
2) With 640x480 turned on, it boots up just fine but the colors are all wonky. No compatibility option can change this as far as I've tried. Also, no native windowed mode. DxWND gives me the same problems as the last two no matter what I do, except in a window.
3) .ini editing does nothing. Disabling or enabling DirectDraw among other things makes no difference. Additionally, many topics say to locate the "real" Alpha Centauri .ini in AppDate, but I've run a search through AppData (Local, LocalLow AND Roaming) with "alpha" "centaura" "meier" and "terran", and nothing comes up at all except for the start menu executable short cut.

This is truly terrible. BTW, I run win7 on a netbook.

Hm... I didn't have problem with it on vista... Besides being forced to run it on full screen, it worked fine.

:(

Check in the documents et all. I don't think it will be under the alpha centauri name. The ini it comes with is only the default ini, so changing it there does nothing indeed.

In fact, search for the exact same .ini filename. You will most likely find the folder you need.

Well, I just now got it to work without compatability stuff by setting Video Mode=800, but I still have the slightly wonky colors and really messed up cursor that comes from running things in 256 colors while fullscreen.

Oh well. It's playable though. I just can't alt+tab out because the game forces my whole system into 256 colors when running  :'(

EDIT: I would just like to say

ha

ha ha ha

HA HA HA.

Set the screen to your native resolution (Or 1024 at least if your monitor can support it) and turn directdraw back on. Also try running it on administrator mode.

None of those made any difference, and I'm already an admin. What did work was setting Video Mode to 800 THEN using DxWnd. Now I have a fully functional 800x600 Alpha Centauri in a window that doesn't mess with anything else.

Umpteenth edit: This game is worth TEN DOLLARS. But is there a way to turn down the number of other factions on the planet to 1 or 2?
