Like bronze age, iron all the way to space or something like that.

That last gobbo would stand there, missing an arm, punctured in a kidney, liver, and spleen, fading in and out of consciousness at the far end of where the drawbridge would go, and his last sight would be the drawbridge dropping down and smashing him like a bug.

Is it set in a near-modern (from WW2 onward) or sci-fi world (counting pseudo-sci-fi like Warhammer 40k and Star Wars as sci-fi)?

Depends on your interpretation of unique, since at least in Red Alert, most of the units are the same, just with a reskin and some numbers tweaked a bit. They don't differ to the extent that they differ in, say, Starcraft, where each unit fills a unique combination of roles.
