So I'm getting a new pc after having survived on a falling apart, out of date pc for some years now. Which means mostly I've been playing a lot of indies, 2D, roguelikes etc..(not that there's anything bad about that), but now I will hopefully be pretty much up to date with current games (AMD quad 3.0ghz, 6G RAM and a Radeon HD6850). I plan on checking out Crysis 2 and Skyrim when it comes out but I've been out of the loop with many of the next gen games, does anyone have any suggestions?

 I'd love to test my rig with some great eye candy but anything that has deeper gaming elements etc.. would be great. Might be awhile until DF HD

DF is actually an incredible CPU load test.

For overall system load, try getting ARMA 2. It uses both CPU and GPU heavily. Don't let the less than A+ graphics fool you! There's a free verison now for multiplayer only that is downloadable at http://www.arma2.com/free or get the full game + the huge expansion pack together for $30 on steam: http://store.steampowered.com/sub/4638/

It has none of the awesome mod support but should give you a chance to see how your system handles.

For overall system load, try getting ARMA 2. It uses both CPU and GPU heavily. Don't let the less than A+ graphics fool you! Arma 2 lags out all systems, it's just buggy and unoptimised.

It is an extremely large simulator with physics and AI behavior calculations for hundreds/thousands of pieces at all times while also processing the user experience. It is about as optimized as current technology allows. Granted, it does strain every computer, it does so because it is a very realistic simulation software. The engine was designed for, and used, by global militaries for training. I used a variant of it with a modified M4 fitted with a laser device while in the military and it was much more useful than the last generation which was basically a Duck Hunt game.

Back on topic, I heartily recommend Arma 2 to test your system and also for the most realistic military experience you can get without subjecting yourself to sleep deprivation and bad food.

And here I just thought Arma 2 was merely a totally fun shooter game that's sort of a sandbox.

It played flawlessly on my system.
Until I tried to make it render at twice my display resolution [1920x1080 => 3840x2160] (for high quality; it's supersampling's big brother), anyway.
*shrug*
Your mileage may vary, I suppose.  Operation Arrowhead/Combined Operations is also better optimized than the original.
