And I support the idea of the (starting) character at least being a member of the colonized population. Not so sure if I like the sci-fi idea so much, but then... that recent alien movie set in S.Africa was really good and sci-fi, we could do something like that but with colonialism instead of apartheid.

No, he's suggesting that the human race is colonizing some other planet, and the events that happen bear a resemblance to what happened during the colonization of India.

Corruption, Big Corporations out for themselves and with military responsibilities, slavery all around, extortion, the exact opposite of "Fair Trade", all that good stuff.

I am reminded very much of an Asimov Short I once read involving the colonization of an alien planet, bringing them "Culture", and in exchange they just had to scour the dangerous jungle collecting a plant that was basically chocolate but without any calories. It was actually a REALLY good story with lots of twists I won't ruin, and I'd love to do something like that.
