Creating personal tilesets
« on: July 27, 2011, 08:25:57 am »

Hi i have a couple questions on making tilesets, would be appreciated if someone could answer them

1) first of all, is it difficult?
2)what programmes are needed?
3)how much coding etc is required?

i might have a couple more later, thanks for the time

1. easy, just time consuming to fix tile to be inside the tile "box" boundary and line up with other tile
2. mspaint or any image editor
3. what?

This is tileset I made for myself - http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?quickkey=f39pni86bcx69dp&thumb=4

Or did I misunderstood you?

you can just download an existing tileset, then replace the actual tileset's graphic-files for your own.
I find MS-Paint the easiest for editing small images such as these, due to the userfriendly pixel editor function.

Don't rename the files and you should not need to code anything,
...unless you count changing the graphics settings from classic ASCII to graphic tileset.

Good luck!
Don't forget to show your efforts here. :D

It's my understanding there are two main file types used for tilesets - .bmp and .png

With .bmp images, transparency is binary (it's either transparent or it isn't) and is determined by that fuschia color. Anything that color will be transparent. Anything not - even off by just a little bit - will be whatever that color is.

With .png images, transparency is stored as a property of each pixel just like the red/blue/green values. This means that you can have a pixel both possess some color AND be partially transparent. The transparency is stored as part of the image.

Sounds like your issue is stemming from combining both of these in some way.

As far as I'm aware, all the tiles you'd need are on the image already. I'd second the above suggestion to download another tileset if only to take a look to get a better idea of what each tile is used for.
