Harvest Moon can be fun, but I prefer the Rune Factory ones more on the DS.

How is Rune Factory?  It seems common and semi cheap so I may get it tomorrow if it shows promise.
Not sure on 1 or 2, but Rune Factory 3 is pretty fun, and has quite a lot of sound clip voice acting for a handheld game. Its pretty much Harvest Moon w/monster fighting added in.

Definitely seconding the Bowser's Inside Story and The World Ends With You suggestions.

Now, you said you were getting a pokemon game and I haven't seen anyone recommend any, so...
If you're willing to go off the beaten track as far as pokemon games go, I highly recommend Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky. ...no, seriously! I don't even like the normal pokemon games and I like that one. Behind the generic cuteness is a pretty decent roguelike engine, and a surprisingly decent story (for a pokemon game, anyways). The main plot will be easy for basically anyone, but there are some insanely brutal post-game dungeons if you like that sorta thing.

What else... Etrian Odyssey is another good one, again with the brutal difficulty (But we all like that here, right? :D). Magical Starsign is an interesting one, I'm borrowing it from a friend. It's an rpg with an interesting story, but I did get bored of random encouters kinda fast. KH: 358/2 Days is good if you, well, like Kingdom Hearts. I guess that's it, I don't have much of a DS collection. I use my PSP more lately, truth be told. :P

I second Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. Good, interesting roguelikes are fairly hard to come by on handhelds, and the pokemon theme fits this one very well.

I forgot Pokemon: Mystery Dungeon, Explores of Sky.(I almost cried at the end of the"In the future of Darkeness"Missions/Scenarios.
 I second this opinion.
Digimon Dawn/Dusk is okay, if you can find it cheap then buy it.

Shiren the Wanderer, if you like roguelikes, is a must.

I second that! Shiren DS is an underappreciated classic (for roguelike fans).

I realize I may as well just copy and paste my response from the last time this was asked, but I'l too lazy to track it down. Good games:

The World Ends With You. Just buy it. So good.

Chrono Trigger and Front Mission, if you haven't played them yet. Actually, even if you have. Play them again.

Zelda : Phantom Hourglass, New Super Mario Bros, Super Scribblenauts, and the Valkyrie Profile game are all games I would highly recommend. Very different games, but they all do what they do very well.

What else... Etrian Odyssey is another good one

Get three! Threeeee! Three has the best balance and a slightly better difficulty curve. You can graduate to the second one after finishing it, and from then move on to the first one if you want more and don't mind some mild unfairness.

Oh and three has a boat. And sheep cheese

I'd say The World Ends With You is a must-buy for the DS. It's one of the most genuinely innovative games I've seen in a long time and it's the only game I've ever played where extensive touch screen controls felt like worthy gameplay instead of a mandated gimmick. I don't own many games, but I honestly feel that TWEWY justified my purchase of a DS by itself.

Don't get Rune Factory 1. Sounds good on paper, not so good in execution.

I've heard the rest are better, but the first one was a total miss for what I was expecting. : <

Well, I have 2 and I have a hard time believing the first could have been any less fun. Which is to say, Rune Factory 2 contains about the minimum amount of fun required for something to be considered a game. A Harvest Moon clone without the charm, a boring combat system, extended tedious dialogue, and an extra helping of fetchquests? And it looked so good :<

I honestly feel that TWEWY justified my purchase of a DS by itself.

I actually bought my DS when TWEWY came out, and I felt the same way.

Yeah, RF1 was terrible. Never played 2, can throw in another vote for RF3, damn good game, especially if you're a grindaholic.

There's a skill level for walking.

WALKING!

Also TWEWY is damn good too, go for it.

Annnnd if you're thinking of getting Final fantasy 1&2 dawn of souls, they're.... decent if you missed the games and wanna see them? But FF1 is rediculously easy, past the first boss it's almost impossible to die unless you're tryin, up to the last boss.

2 is about as easy but pretty vague on the direction you need to go in.

I don't think anyone's mentioned it yet, but if you're amenable to the genre, Hotel Dusk: Room 215 is just incredibly stylish. It was one of the first DS games I played that felt like it was using the console properly rather than tacking gimmicks on. YMMV though.

If youve ever played any of the final fantasy tactics games, guess what, FINAL FANTASY TACTICS: GRIMORIE OF THE RIFT. Ive never played it, but I assume it has a massivly long time before you reach the end, just like the others. . . .come to think of it, there was only one other, so that makes Grimorie of the rift a FFT sequel!
