Forgotten beast first!

So I have a fortress worth 400,000 or so, and after mining into the caverns, a Forgotten Beast appeared. Which is fine and all.. but I haven't seen hide nor hair of a single goblin invasion, let alone kobolds. Why not?
Also: Advice for killing a forgotten beast without a military would be appreciated. I locked the gates and all, but I really would like to be able to continue delving into the deep places of the world.. and if I don't kill it, I can't do that.

You may have genned the world with a small amount of civilizations; if that's so, and no goblin civilization shows up when you press C, you'll need to wait for them to settle nearby before you can be attacked by them. To kill the forgotten beast, make a single 1 tile wide passage leading into your fort from the caverns and fill it with weapon traps; he should be dead by the time he reaches the other end of it.

We were hoping for a constant fort at some point, having players in different time zones so that the fort never actually stopped running.  Come back overnight and find a giant penis has been constructed.  Glory to the penis gods.

I'll make that tunnel extra long, though I'm pretty sure the antmen helped already.
... Can I trade with the antmen?

FBs are [TRAPAVOID], so weapon traps won't trigger when they walk over them.

Filling the hallway with menacing spikes, linked to a lever, though, should work, depending on what the FB is made of.

I disagree about weapon traps, FB's are immune to them! To make this work it shall be tunnel, filled with upright spear/spike traps, and a dwarf pulling an attached lever there and back maniacally (use (R)epeat for pull lever task).

Also, FB's stand two tiles away from door while destroying it, it takes some time to destroy one, so the two tile away spot may be a good choice for placing your traps. I used to cave in on top of this spot, but that will probably be more complicated to prepare.

I'll get to that spike trap in a while, I guess, since I can't harvest lumber from the surface right now for... various !fun! reasons. I'm waiting on tower-caps to grow in the clay layers, though that takes awhile anyway.
It's... I think instead of a door, I'll link two drawbridges to the same hallway, with a massive hallway full of menacing spikes. with luck, the FB will go back and forth and get ripped to shreds without much trouble.
The FB is Gut Lulooxxo Ngurdaolok. A huge monitor with lidless eyes. It has an enormous shell and it belches and croaks. It's slate gray scales are small and close-set. Beware it's poisonous gas!

Kobolds die out in world gen now, so unless you mod their file, you won't be seeing them until next release.

Goblin sieges don't come until you have 80 dwarves. Thus, it's entirely possible to get FBs without any goblins whatsoever. I've seen dozens of Forgotten Beasts, but only a few sieges, as I generally keep a low population.

The only civs that you can trade with are dwarves, humans, and elves, as well as ocasionally goblins, if you're somehow at peace with them.

For killing the FB, I'd recommend using a trained military. They usually do the job well. Past that, cave-ins and spikes can kill just about anything, but using bridges to confuse it could be dangerous. Your lever-puller decides to go get a drink, leaves the wrong bridge down... Actually, go for it. Sounds like Fun.

The FB is made of shell, a single peasant punch will probably kill it.

Goblins only trade with you if you mod out the CHILD_SNATCHER tag.  That one forces them to be hostile.  Without it there is still a good chance of a world-gen war since they have pretty intolerable ethics.

If your antmen (including, in my most recent case, antwomen) get attacked by the FB, they can turn officially "Friendly".  I forget now if that means they can be let to wander around your fortress, etc, and in the aforementioned example of mine the next FB that came along slaughtered the visible subterranean civilisation members prior to me making any sort of gesture towards creating a walkable route that they could take into my fortress.  (When I break into the cavern tops again, further across, I may find others of their ilk skulking around.)

From historic tales, I believe they will act like trader escorts and randomly wander around, attacking all officially "Hostile" creatures, and the like, but causing you and all associated friendlies no problem and (unconsciousness aside) having safe passage across your traps.  This may or may not be reflected in the latest version of the game, however.

It's not made of shell. It has a shell. It went through a group of ant men soldiers fairly quickly.

And yes, the risk of the dwarf pulling levers wandering off is very full of the possibility for Fun.
Hence why, once I get the spike filled tunnel, I'm doing it.
Even if the FB is long dead, I need a defense down there anyway.

OK but still, a punch will send the shell flying off, very likely killing it due to how FBs work right now. What I'm saying is even a barely trained military can probably kill it.

A reliable method I've found to deal with FBs is to trap them. Bridges are practically indestructible so I build a retractable bridge over a small pit that leads into a larger room and link a lever to it. To attract the FB find your least favorite animal and chain it up in the room. With the bridge retracted the FB should eventually go in after the animal. I advise blocking off the rest of your fortress in case the FB prefers dwarf meat. The rest is all timing. If you already have an FB wandering around, build another bridge-door to the rest of your fortress before you dig into the cavern to make sure your miner gets back safely.

If you want to kill the FB, carve some fortifications into the walls of the trap room in advance and dig some tunnels around it. FBs provide excellent training for marksdwarves, especially if you use wooden bolts.

Tantrum spiral from a failed mood which caused the dwarf to berserk.
So that was !fun!.
Kinda sad though. :( My first failed mood in the fortress and it meant failure.
