DF incredibly slow on a high-end computer
« on: February 22, 2008, 08:46:00 pm »

I absolutely love this game, and I play it on hours on end. However, one day I decided to play it on my laptop..which ran it incredibly fast, I didn't have an FPS meter up, but everything in the game was very fast. Dwarves would fly around, jobs get done so quick, and novice miners could mine a 20x20 room of rock in about 3-4 minutes. This was a hell of a lot better than my desktop, which has much better specs (AMD Athlon X2 3800+, 8800 GT, 2 gb RAM). My laptop was a single core with an integrated GPU and the same amount of RAM.

What I don't understand is, why is it so slow on my desktop? I've tinkered with the init.txt and nothing has changed. On my laptop, the intro actually flowed correctly, however my desktop runs it with frames changing at around 3 seconds.

Now that my laptop died (port for outlet power supply didn't detect the brick), I'm back again at my desktop. It's almost depressing how long it takes to do stuff. I've set affinity already for one core, but nothing.

I've read some of the threads on framerate, but they seem to aimed towards more people with CPU's that can't handle the horrendous amount of calculations this game makes.

Or am I just spoiled?

I seem to recall that some performance problems were related to certain NVidia video drivers. . .

Being out of date?

A lot of it has to do with the location you're playing on, these days.

Absolutely, however I'm playing on the same map my laptop was running before it died.

Do not update NVidia drivers!

Ask Torak about it, he's the expert.

Well, I don't think I can downgrade..

I guess I'll go talk to Torak.

Is it the same OS on both systems? This could be a factor.

But from the sounds of how it runs it probably is a driver issue;  do other games play well on the desktop system?

Both run XP

Yes, with no problem.

Did you set the DF's processor affinity to only one core? I've heard that's another common issue.

Fairly sure it's a problem with your graphics card and OpenGL, because the intro is so slow. From the DFWiki:

"
   * If framerate is extremely slow with an otherwise CPU-friendly fortress and a decent machine, your graphic card's interaction with the OpenGL code used by the game may be at fault. Updating your drivers usually works; you may also have to adjust some settings in your graphic card's control software, such as turning vertical synchronization off. "

I have had problems with OpenGL before.

Let me see if I can tinker with something in control panel

EDIT: Besides vertical sync, is there anything else I should change?

Is your graphics card a GTS or GTX series? I have an 8800 GTS, only 1GB RAM and the same processor, running XP too. I don't experience any framerate problems when starting a fortress (FPS around 150). Therefore, your problem is likely to be related to your drivers.

start -> run -> dxdiag
click "save all informations...", then paste the content of the text file into pastebin.ca and link to it here.
