arepa mi pana arepa!/pone
« on: July 25, 2011, 05:35:10 pm »

So, i really love to cook in dwarf fortress, i even have a dedicated and exclusive chamber in my fortress only to cook and those things, but there should be some more realistic things in the coocking aspect of the game? like when making biscuits with wheat there should be the required use of water and eggs, also there should be things like cakes, bread, and other "advanced" types of food, i know that dwarf fortress combines reality with fantasy, but it really would be more changelling in that way? also another food type like "arepas" or "pones" would be really good (search in google "arepa" a food originary from venezuela) cuz actually think of a limit of 4 ingredients in a food type makes it look a bit unrealistic... just what i think...

Did you know that if you write 3.14 on a piece of paper and hold it in a mirror, it will say pie? And if you divide 42 by 3.14... you get 13.37!

You wouldn't rush Goya or Faulkner or Tarantino. Think about Toady as equal to those artists. And then deal with it.

Agreed there. Since it's based of "Western Fantasy" we should have Europian meals.
Gruel, gums, stews, roasts, breads, all the good stuff.

That said I'm a bit scared of the cooking arch. I don't really want to have to collect a massive assortment of goods and then try to figure out how to make something out of them. I already suck at cooking, don't need the game telling me!

In my fortress you will eat your plump helmet, kitten meat and bone meal vodka stew and you will like it!

You'd be surprised at some of the recipes that were created during seiges/long periods of famine. I remember reading about a Russian fortress being seiged and a factory exploded. They ended up gathering all the chemicals that had been frozen by the ice and gave it out to the starving kids, calling it "candy".

Also cat used to be a large portion of the violin string makers' meals.  You're already cutting up kitties for their guts, why waste the rest?

Regardless, the idea is sound.

This could be implemented in 2 ways, one requiring less work than the other.

The first way is to have it so that we can make specific recipes in the RAWs for the kitchen, i.e. a new RAW type. IIRC, we can sort of make recipes right now.

The second way is to implement a framework in which recipes can be implemented in the game, go here and scroll down to ingredient based cooking.

Iv seen people who haven't had a redheaded person in their family for quite a while, and then out of nowhere two out of three of their children have red hair.

"arepa mi pana arepa!/pone"
What is that exactly? Toki pona? :S

arepa= search in wikipedia "arepa" then traslate to english
mi= my
pana= a way to say "pal" or "friend" but from venezuela

instead of having some meals from venezuela which nobody knows it'd be better to just have bread, cakes, soup etc

i also mentioned that, i just mentioned the "arepa" for saying a example (they are maked with flour, oil and water, well the fryed version its maked with oil)...

yeah i forgott about that, since i saw things from others cultures and countrys including venezuela, like the capybara (a big rodent in venezuela) pandas wich are from china, and elephants wich are from africa just to mention ones i thinked on that meal just as a example... but that would be the idea, cooking thibgs requires a lot of things in real world, and currently in DF it is a bit minecraftish... so thats why i suggested the "cook" matter being more dificult just like in real life, but more rewarding than it is in this moment.

here in venezuela the christmas meal called "hayaca" its amde from meat, olives, raisins and wheat, the funny thing its that it was originated from poor families in the colony times gathering the remains of others foods, but ended being very refinated, just like sushi, wich originated from eating raw fish without cooking to not make smoke which would give signs fo your location in a war...

well what i wanted to say apart from that its that, cooking in DF its very simple and easy, it feels like minecraft, i mean u need gas or fuel to cook something, and most of the times u need water to make some biscuits, cakes, soups, etc... it would be more dificult, but there should be a countermeasure that balances it, like more happy toughts, larger stacks of meals or others things like that...

yeah, tought african elephants are the most pouplar that i know, i mean when people talks about elephants, they just think on africa, about the culture, well, that i have seen, things like wool capes, caps and similar ones just remind me of Peruans "ponchos" and "hats" and that i know there are also others cultural marks and references in the game that pertains to other cultures taht arent from europe i think, but u get the point.
