Well i want to be kinda serious , so This pikeman retired :)

Settle him down in some place, later you might be able to see in Legends mode what happened to him after a while.
Something epic might be in store for him.
Or simply a boring life of growing old.
neither.  nothing happens except death by old age after worldgen.

you can equip plenty of weapons, just remove them from your backpack, and they should be in your hand, available for use.

once you have the crutch, walk around for some time, and you will hit legendary crutch walker.  then, there will be no noticeable difference from an uninjured adventurer, aside from lack of a kick for that leg, and an extra crutch attack being available.

I found retired adventurers seem to be fairly easily recruited once you get some skill built up. (of course, i really have only had one last long enough for me to consider retirement.

Hmm.. I must have been wrong then.. Well I do rarely play Adventure mode..
even in fortress mode.  unfortunately, currently, after worldgen, the world is basically frozen.  even death by old age does not happen untill the entity past its expiration date enters your map (in adventure mode, i'd assume it to be your local vicinity).

this leads to humorous situations sometimes, as you attract your king.... only to have him die of old age when he steps foot onto your embark.

theres a much more full explanation in the "continue worldgen" suggestion thread.

Yes I DO know the world is frozen.
What I meant with rarely play Adventure mode, is that I have no idea what happens to the character when you retire him, and simply replied with what I read elsewere. I must have been mistaken of some things.

ah, did not mean to cause offense.  i myself was only recently debased of the idea that things happen after worldgen.  kind of sad, as i was hoping my one that actually made it to retirement would get married and father little adventurers for me.

If the dreaded nerve damage wounds annoy you, just remove [HAS_NERVES] from raw/objects/creature_standard text file under Dwarves.

No more nerve damage!

Of course, you won't be able to walk if you lose your leg...
But I'm pretty sure there's a tag for that, too. Something that keeps limbs from getting disconnected.

or mod nerves to heal slowly.  that's less of a "cheat" as without nerves, are they not pain immune?

How can I mod nerves to heal slowly?

EDIT - I'll ask in the modding section.

no need, the answer was in the wiki under "wound"

Quote
If you want your dwarves to heal spinal nerve damage, go into the raws, find the tissue_template_default and set [HEALING_RATE:100] to the NERVE_TEMPLATE. Optionally, specify 2000 for a much slower rate; bone has a healing rate of 1000, so this will make nerve damage heal at half the speed of broken bones. However, this does not affect other nerves, as they apparently do not count as "nervous tissue".

edit, i cannot find anything about moter nerves, they are perhaps called something else in the raws, and the wiki gives me no hint about how to mod those to heal.

reminds me, i need to mod my own nervous tissue (and nails) to heal.
