Can Minotaurs breed?
« on: July 25, 2011, 12:04:33 pm »

I have caught two Minotaurs in cages, one female and one male. The simple question is: will they breed or can they not?

i think they must be tamed first.  i seem to remember something about only tamed creatures breeding during fort mode.

Oh...that sucks because you can't tame them. They're megabeasts...

What would happen if you added the tameable tag onto their raws?  :o

you can tame dragons and rocs.... the problem is that they are sentient (can_speak, can_learn)

perhaps add the pet tag?

Minotaurs won't breed because they don't have the [PET] tag.  If you mod them to have the [PET] tag, and have a male and a female on your map and uncaged, they should breed.  It's possible that the [SEMIMEGABEAST] tag might prevent them from breeding - this needs to be tested.

Er...I'm new at the editing raw things. Where are minotaurs located?

EDIT: I found it! And I also found that it has the    [CAN_LEARN][CAN_SPEAK] tags. Does that mean that they should be able to breed? And, because everything born on your fort soil, is friendly, if a minotaur calf is born, will it's parents attack it?

Are you sure about wild animals not procreating? I swear I remember a herd of horses get trapped in a closed off construction site in one of my fortresses once, and at one point horse foals starting pouring out. Don't ask me what they ate in there.

But on topic, I don't think intelligent tag or anything involving sentience has any effect on breeding, in fact I remember my last fortress having some tiger man cubs running around. They were tame however if that would indeed matter.
Minotaurs are semi megabeasts arent they? I don't know how that effects it.

I'm just afraid if I lock them in a room that they'll kill any child born since the child will be 'friendly'.

In addition, what do the tags [BABY:1] and [CHILD:12] mean? Does that have to do with how long they are classed as children or the amount of children born?

Wild animals can breed, so long as they have the [PET] tag in their raws.  Horses have the [PET] tag, so they can breed - even if they're wild horses.  And only tame animals need to eat, so wild horses don't need to graze.

Intelligence doesn't matter, since tame tigermen can breed.  Being a semimegabeast might, I'm not sure.

It shouldn't, since wild animals breed and don't kill their children.  There is some weirdness with the offspring of invader mounts where they'll attack their children, but that shouldn't apply here.

It's the ages of transition.  They'll be babies until they're 1 year old, then children till they're 12 years old.

Well I'll report back. I changed the raws so minotaurs will become fully grown in 2 years just to see if it'll work. Imagine: an army of minotaurs at your control!...This will be interesting! I think I'll add the PET tag as well.

Mission report: Failed.

Note to self: Do not add the [PET] tag, because they are 'herbivores', so they needed a pasture...so they died. Great -.-
