Yes, that was the problem. I placed a plot completely underground and now my farmers are actually doing their job. I think the plots not being fully covered by a roof also explains why I could select both indoors and outdoors crops for my plots. Well, all of my problems seem to be solved for now. Thanks to everyone who answered!
