Forgotten Beast and his CTD attack.
« on: July 25, 2011, 10:52:13 am »

'Sup guys.
So, a Forgotten Beast came to my cave.
And it's not the kind of forgotten beast that you just say "GTFO" and he die.
He's a freaking buffalo with deadly dust attack.
Not a problem for my militia.
Ok... really, he is a fucking huge problem. But I manage to kill him sending 30 experts swords/hammer/spears.
Hard fight. 5 killed by its attacks and other 12 killed by its dust.
I was victorious.
Nah, the game crashed just after.

So, I try again.
It was harder this time.
20 soldiers lost theirs lives, but we had success!

No, we hadn't.
The game crashed again.

Maybe this topic should be at the "Gameplay Questions", or better yet, the bug report (that I'll have to create a account on another site -.-) but does anyone know this/had this/know how to fix this?
What the hell???
Will I have really to start over?
Anyone had this problem or know hot to fix?
Or the Titan is so fucking amazing that his powers crashes the game?

A little while back someone had a similar glitch where the game would crash every time a certain dwarf died.

Try copying the save into a different Dwarf Fortress folder and playing it in that game.

Obviously his deadly dust is clogging your computer's fans.

I moved the saves and killed the foul beast with 4 soldiers killed.
And guess what happened?
Crash.

Any other idea? xD

There is a way to "erase his existance" but without compromising another thing like the apearences of other FB? Because if I kill him using some magic (raw files) the game is probably going to crash anyway.

Given that you've killed this monster like five times with the game always crashing afterward, I'd say you're entitled to use Runesmith to kill him. Download Runesmith (it should be somewhere on the forums), and mark the FB with the "dead" and "killed" tags.

Or you could really help the development of Dwarf Fortress by opening a bug report on Mantis and uploading your save so Toady can fix it for the next time.

Ok, ok.
Im going to upload.
But I think killing it in any way wont fix it.
Going to search for runesmith but dunno if's gonna work.

I just had a bug that caused my game to crash if i wanted to check inventory on my many-times-over sutured dwarf.
Are you sure the game crashes by itself, and not because you are trying to take a certain action?

If I "Genocide", will other FB and Megabeasts still come over?
Or there is another way to "kill"?
Dunno how to use Runesmith :P

Another option is to use DFhack to place obsidian squares around and above the FB to seal it in. It's pretty simple. Fire up DFliquids, press 'o' and Enter to make it place obsidian, then 'k' over the tile you want to alter and press Enter. Repeat as necessary.

Runesmith is probably easier though, as all you need to do is select the FB from the list and tick a couple of boxes.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Maybe he should save that save... so that Toady can determine what bug is causing it.

I sent a Report but I didin't knew how to send the save.
What I did was use the Runesmith to send it away.
It worked.
Hope he never come back.

Was the FB made of any particular materials?  I've had some CTD troubles with beasts made from the (now obsolete) hard-coded material types (like amber and water and ice), since when they die the game has trouble figuring out the death items.  If so, make sure you mention it in the bug reports.

Glad you found a workaround, though :)

I've had display related crashes r/t deadly dust.  The reason that I say they're display related is that they only happen when I'm actually watching the dust come out-- don't happen if I'm looking at a different z-level.  If you haven't already, you might consider rerunning the combat without watching it.

He he he.  Yeah, it almost looks done...  alas...  those who are in your teens, hold on until your twenties...  those in your twenties, your thirties...  others, cling to life as you are able...<P>It should be pretty fun though.
