Modding undeads to be a threat
« on: July 24, 2011, 10:50:05 pm »

I've found that in 31.25, zombie and skeletal creatures can only a be a threat by potentially starting tantrum spirals due to the miasma and bad thoughts your dwarves get from being attacked by the dead.

My understanding is that undead creatures now have a hit point system so that they magically fall over dead once you apply enough force to them by attacking them. I'd like to know if there's a way to increase the amount of hit points undeads have to make them drastically more challenging in combat, or failing that to have a way to make them more dangerous using some other methods.

Thanks.

I've never tried modding in a creature before, but maybe you can increase bone strength? Or make a race with a alot of bones?

Not possible. Even if you made the base creature more powerful they will still fall apart. Just sit tight until .26 all that is fixed.

You could mod in a skeleton or zombie creature. They would not have exactly the same behavior and characteristics of the undead currently in the game, but they could be made reasonably similar, and they would act like normal creatures in regards to combat.

You could also do it the Toady One way, and attempt to change HP in the game files yourself.

Perhaps you can alter the skin thickness/natural armor (if they have skin at all).

That would make it harder to kill them, but if I were you, I would follow IT 000's advice and just wait until .26 makes zombies awesome.

Isn't it hard coded?

I believe this is the point jaxy was making. The 'dwarfy' way to solve this problem is to use a hex-editor and try to alter the actual value in the executable file. It should just be a number which can be edited, though finding it would be an almost insurmountable problem.

This guy gets it, the problem with the child torture dungeon is that they weren't set on fire first.

Well you could attach a regenerating limb function to a hex editor that checks for damages and fixes them, you could also throw in an exception like if head is damaged ignore or if head is cut off flip the dead flag.

You could use a cheat engine, to find and change the assembly code, even if perhaps it would be better suited to removing the code altogether rather than reducing it.

or use Dfusion and run the zombie command, or combine the zombie command and the resurrection command to have walking fighting zombies.

Would probably be worth waiting for the next version, since undead are due for some pretty massive changes.  I suspect they will be a real threat soon.
