"please send what?"

one of my dwarves seems to be trapped -inside' my magma smelter- the part that hangs over the magma. he can't leave, and is spamming my announcements with "XX cancels eat: can't find path!" "XX cancels drink: can't find path!" "XX cancels die with dignity: can't find path!" and I'm afraid if I remove the building he'll burn up in the magma.

what do I do?

There's a utility specifically for that to teleport dwarfs.

If he is a regular civvie, draft him as a soldier then station him elsewhere.  He will move off magma tile.

If a child or noble or pet or anything unrecruitable ... You can draft a third party dwarf as a soldier and station ON TO the magma tile and the trapped dwarf.  The recruit will move into the same tile as the trapped dwarf.  Did the trapped dwarf get displaced?  No?  Move the soldier away and then back onto the tile.  Repeat as needed.

also, I tried drafting him into the military and stationing him far away on land. no dice

just to clarify, i had another dwarf jump in to another smelter and get stuck right after this message- the military drafting worked on him, but not this guy. the hell?

Drafting into the military should always work.  Fixes dwarves stuck on magma, installed statues, wells and windows.  However, soldiers won't ever go to a station unless they are on duty.

[m]military -> [v]view -> [t]toggle on/off duty

Default for a new recruit is on duty.  If your guy was already dehydrated, starving, etc.. then that might break the soldier fix also.

Instead of stationing another dwarf at the spot , you can also have him patrol in and out of the tile, then you don't have to re-station him if it doesn't work at the first try..

..you could even think about having a dwarf patrol all magma workshops permanently as a precaution, but I've never tried that.

Though you've probably solved this by now, if all else fails, just remove the smelter. I had my best miner stuck on a 1 sq tile on the wrong side of a magma floodgate. As I hadn't made the channel on the other side, when my mechanics got their butt into gear my plan was to lower the floodgate and try building a 1sq bridge over it. Amazingly the miner must have taken advantage of the split second between the gate going down and it filling with lava because he got his ass back on my good side and ran off to the (furtherest!) well.

You'd think for earning legendary status you'd learn not to dig yrself into a corner!   :roll:

I could build a network of bridges over the magma behind my furnaces.  Which is more valuable, a half dozen or more steel bars or nuisance children stuck in my smelters?  Hah.

EDIT:  And removing the smelter will likely plunge whoever you're trying to save into the magma.

The bridge network will allow you to trap demons in smelters. Build asap!

Bridges won't help as far as I know. At least when they are stuck already. Cause building bridges all over the place was what I first tried when it happened to me...

Once they go "hunting for vermin" they're stuck, even drafting won't work because they'll abandon their post in favor of hunting.
