Dwarves Starving Despite Abundant Food
« on: June 19, 2007, 07:41:00 pm »

1. I have 264 Plump Helmets, many, if not all, of which are in food stockpiles in barrels.
2. I am running the latest version of DF, and my fortress is also pre-Dwarven Economy.
3. I am quite sure no food is being hauled - I suspended cooking and brewing, and a dwarf I have with only Mining, Food Hauling, and Health Care enabled sits around with no job. I must also point out it is quite implausible for such a large amount of plump helmets to be tied up simultaneously for a fortress with my population previously around 60.
4. I have a dining hall (A nice one at that)with plenty tables and chairs
5. My dwarves have no trouble drinking alcohol, which is stored in the same stockpiles as the food, for the most part. They also seem to eat fish that gets caught and processed.

This is the second time this has happened - I reverted to an earlier save to see if I could get around this, but it appears not. It seems to always happen as I approach 264 plump helmets left. In the time that it took me to write this post, it appears that my plump helmet stock has been reduced to 263, but no less.

Can you cook or brew with them? I think I know what's going on.

It seems that dwarves actually get tired of certain foods.  I was having a meat shortage during a year early in the growth of my fortress, as I was trying to breed my stock.  After 2 years of eating helmets my dwarves just refused to eat them any more.  Get them some variety and they will be satisfied.

I don't consider that behavior a bug, it is a feature.  Might be nice if it said something on thier thought screen though.

Yeah, that HAS to be a bug. Maybe they should be reluctant to eat more plump helmets, but not to outright refuse when they are DYING FROM HUNGER.

You'd be surprised how stubborn dwarfs can be.

Heh, I have learned, FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, that if you are starving, you will eat ANYTHING.

I mean, come on, they are willing to eat WORMS, for crissakes! Why won't they eat the same old same old?

Yeah, I had to eat nuttin but taters and onions for about a year. (College tuition is very hard on those of us not independently wealthy, but that's a 'nother bag of worms I won't go into...)

'Course, if it is a feature, it's kinda neat, but, um, yeah, starving, you will eat whatever you can.

Hi, I'm a real newbie on this game (discovered it yesterday (and wow!! great game, good job) but thats not the point)

I think I have the same food bug, i have smthing like 88 plump helmet spawns in a barrel and no one can eat it, they're all starving... It's in a stockpile, i even suppressed the existing stockpile and created an other next to it, they did moved the barrel in the new stockpile but still can't eat. I tried to cook them but it's a bit too late and they are all only eating worms...

It's a total suggestion and I don't know if the problem can come from this, but this is a reclaimed fortress, and the barrel was here with food before i arrived, it was just filled with new seeds.

And it cannot be because they ate too much plump, it's the end of the first winter !!

I've had starving occur because the food is "claimed" by another dwarf who cannot complete the "Eat" task.

If you've got a dwarf stranded somewhere, he could be claiming food in the stockpile, and when he can't get to it, will claim another piece of food. Claimed food is off limits to the other dwarves.

I've had this issue a few times with the latest version, and it seems oddly enough, to be triggered by a seemingly unrelated option.

Whenever i set it to have all dwarves stay indoors, as i have done at the start of a few forts after bringing the food that came with me into the fortress, they'll seem to ignore the food stockpile and willingly starve themseves to death unless i allow them to go back outside. at what point, they'll go and eat normally again.

That's the seeds. You'll have to set up a farm, plant them and then you'll get new plump helmets to eat.

Also hay welcome to DF :V

I read somewhere (can't remember, checked wiki, not there) Toady saying that there are other, programmed complications that can happen with food storage and barrels, and I think he alluded to the idea of vermin. Perhaps (particularly if the barrel was there when you reclaimed the fortress) the barrels that are storing that food are infested.

Cats hunt vermin, so if this is really the problem, maybe invest in some kitties?

Or if you're really desperate and people are currently starving, cook some of the seeds in the kitchen till the ones you plant are ready to be harvested.

There's also the problem that if a dwarf ever starts hunting for vermin, he will not stop until he catches and eats said vermin, even if better food becomes available before he's done hunting.  If all vermin are gone (eaten by cats or other dwarves), then he can starve to death.
