Weird, I have the exact opposite problem: I love to dig out and build my forts up, but I hate that my dwarves need "sleep" and "nourishment" and "protection from invaders" and whatnot. That is why I am working on my autodwarves - nearly indestructible automatons with no fear or need to stop working ever.

That didn't last long, huh? Shame, cause binary's cool. Anyway, an important message: I will be changing my names on every username based thing I use to ASCIt on/around 10/1. Consolidating, I guess you could say.

OP, that's basically why DF and I have an on and off relationship. You and I just both need to get over it. If you don't like an area, you can always flatten it out and turn it into some sort of death area for FUN.

There's a time in every dwarfs life that he must face the sad reality that his home will eventually be brutally demolished by a 600 humped, syndrome spewing, rainbow colored giant snail(with wings); and everything before said rainbow snail is merely to make the inevitable catastrophe more horrifying.

After you realize that, all the messy animal pieces, random holes and miasma seem like home.

(its also worth noting that the game allows you to re-embark after all this happens, and reclaim your home.)

If you embark and it seems absolutely perfect, immediately save and back up the region folder in your DF saves (I like to add 'original' to the name so I know what it is)
Then when you inevitably find problems with your design you can restore your pristine backup and try again.  Also get used to force-killing DF via the task manager when some idiot dwarf manages to deconstruct some floor tiles in the only possible order that could cause a cave-in, or when a camel kicks your legendary mechanic in the head before he can finish setting up the cage traps, killing him instantly.

My problem is that my fortresses are terribly well designed. i want them look messy and mazeish and hopelessly inefficent.
This is just too clean

WHAT.  You build your fortresses so open!  I never have a space that's bigger than 5x5 unless it's a dining room or some such...

Anyways, I too suffer from Perfectitis, and this is how I'm treating myself: F*** IT!

I've started a fort (inspired by Failcannon in embark and ridiculousness) and I'm just building stuff as I need it.  I do a few little things-- circular rooms, central staircase--, but I've so far abandoned my usual perfectionism.  I'm not even distressed at the fact that I just began the third year of my fortress and there are already more dead that living!  The Giant Badgers have a lot to do with that, as well as the constant goblin ambushes and sieges!

I'm having so much more fun than when I'm playing normally (Perfectitis-y)!

I have a problem with this as well. In fact I go to the difficulty of embarking on only volcano maps just because I'm obsessed with all the furniture being high value masterpieces but in order to get that produced you need a LOT of stone and I don't like wasting stone so I just obsidian farm.

Perfectionism is a terrible thing in DF.

There's so much stone in any given map you shouldn't really worry about wasting it.

Wow, even by the DF standards where OCD is the norm, this is indeed terrible.

Most people try to find ways of getting rid of stone (mostly to avoid lag), but you save it?

It's not like stone is in short supply anyway ...

Got the same problem as most of the People here. Im a noob considering what others build and do in df, and i tend to abadon perfectly fine Fortresses because i messed the Design up. Everytime i see one of those Screenshots of Forts from experienced Players im like "im never gonna be aible to build something like that" then look at my crap Fort and usually abadon it or let my Dwarves die with the next Siege. My other major problem is that i tend to hide behind Drawbridges and lots of Cagetraps, even if i told myself to not build those as a Rule. Its usually around the End of Year 2 that it hits me again "Invaders will come, and i cant set up a Military with my 30 Dwarves" (mostly because i dont even have a Metalindustry at that point) and 5 Minutes later the Cagetraps are ordered.

I think the reason im playing like that is because im scared to try things out myself. I still play the same as i did when i just started learning df with a Tutorial (from tinypirate), so every Fort i play usually looks almost the same and gets abadoned around the same time (at the point where i would have to come up with my own Choices and Priorities).

1. There's nothing wrong with hiding behind cage traps, especially if you just do it as a defence and then later get rid of them in favour of your military.  A drawbridge is a good self-defence that I keep forever in my forts, because you don't have to use it if you think you'll survive (or if you just wanna lose a few dozen dwarves).
2. Don't get discouraged by other people's stuff, because other people are crazy, and maybe you're a) not crazy or b) not crazy enough, yet.  I use other peoples' awesome ideas as inspiration for my own, but mostly I just build what I want without paying attention to what other people've built.
3. Your fort isn't crap, it's different.  And different is good!  As you keep playing, you'll get better and better and eventually develop your own style that's unique!

I advise you to stop trying to compare your fort to another and just enjoy playing.  And SCREW PERFECTITIS!

I've managed to run out of stone. Small, short vertical fortress + ever-creeping above-ground sprawl = "wait, the stone counter actually dipped below 99? PANIC"

The way I deal with temporary accomodation is either to have a plan for the end fortress that allows me to move everyone into the eventual corridors / current fortress, or to bring a bunch of raw material to create a palisade so I can work on the surface.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

You could build an above ground fort made out of wood supported by a slim pillar and live like an elf.  Limit the number of trees you chop down a year so that you don't have to concern yourself with ruining the landscape, feed your populace by gathering berries. Refrain from hunting or fishing so as to not deplete the wildlife, but consider butchering animals killed in self defense or only eating the meat of dogs and kittens descended from the animals you brought with you.  When your population grows well over 100 and trade and gathering can no longer keep your dwarves swimming in booze, you might have to tearfully plant some strawberries in a 3x3 farm somewhere, but rest assured, even if you change your mind on the placement of the plot afterwards, the grass will regrow.

soon your autodwarves will rebel against your five-faced overlordship.  then, some time after that, they will split into two factions, and someday your autodwarves and deceptidwarves will migrate to a seperate world and start fighting on your embark there.
