Dear Toady, this makes you a jerk
« on: July 24, 2011, 06:57:07 am »

Quote from: Bay 12 Games Forum
"solicitations are also forbidden on this forum"

It sets a very bad precedent to allow people to ask for money on the board.

Toady

I wasn't asking for money toady, I never said give me money or else I'll blow up your grandmother's house, I said if you would like to, you can donate to help me pay my $5000 medical bill for my dieing puppy. I'm not easily able to shell out a few thousand dollars like you probably are via DF donations.
And I don't feel that that warning was justified at all, If you read the thread I was completely fine with the notion that people were giving emotional support instead of monitary, It was the emotional fact that people
knew what I was going through and cared enough to comment about it, I spent the last 10 hours or so, I can't even keep track of the time, holding my dieing puppy in my fucking arms and crying, I don't cry, I'm enlisted in the god damned army for christ sake.
I think it sets a very bad precedent to issue someone a warning and remove their thread instead of politely asking for the COMPLETELY OPTIONAL donation link. But that's just me.

Saint

P.S. you shouldn't treat everything as a cookie cutter, you've really shown that you're heartless and cold in my eyes. So this means I'll no longer donate to DF, jerk.

Sorry, Saint, but enforcing rules which were set out long beforehand does not make someone a jerk. Furthermore, yes, you were asking for money. Suggesting an alternative to giving money doesn't mean you weren't asking in the first place. Good luck on getting a loan for your dog.

Sorry dude, but toady was right for the exact reasons he stated.
Begging for money is a business, and the nuisances if toady allowed it would never end.

•Do not pick a fight or insult another poster.  Do not continue a fight if you feel you have been insulted.  Report it to the moderator.  If you instead respond in kind, you run the risk of being considered part of the problem.
•Despite its prevalence on the internet, bigoted language is frowned upon here.  Do not go there.
•Do not disrupt a thread with spam, giant images or intentionally garbled language.  Screenshots and so on that make sense in context are also allowed, but image spam is not allowed.  Forum games may use giant images but only in the spirit of the game as defined by the OP.
•If the creator of a thread gives appropriate additional guidelines for an individual thread, please try to respect them.  Threads often drift away from their opening themes here, and there isn't a strong sense of thread "ownership", so there's a gray area, but if a thread has been designed for a specific purpose, please try to adhere to that, especially if the creator urges you to do so.  Do not derail threads.
•If you post links to illegal material (files that are being illegally distributed, ie unsanctioned commercial game/music torrents/downloads, etc.) or post illegal images (or images that would have been behind 18+ warnings, etc.), you will be banned.  Don't ask for links or otherwise ask to be directed to places where you can download/obtain things like that either, even if the situation is somewhat more lax in your locality.
•Do not discuss sexually oriented material.  There are exceptions to this rule, such as passing discussions of sexual content in movies, books, computer games, etc. in topics not directed specifically at the sexual material in question, but no sexually themed topics are allowed.  Sharing erotic images and erotic roleplaying are not permitted.  If you want to turn each other on, there are plenty of outlets for that.  This is not one of them.  Please refrain from sharing your sex life.

These are the forum guidelines that I read, I see no part of that in there. Honestly I'm lost on to where this rule of the forums came from.

It isn't anything personal, it's just that if toady lets you ask for donations, then he needs to let the next guy do the same, and so on. Toady is a nice guy, who gives away he's life work for free. He is like an anti-jerk. Somewhere out there is a real douchebag, but that is ok because toady negates that.

I'd love to say it was unfair of him to not make an exception in your case, but he really shouldn't make exceptions, it sets a bad precedent. Having your puppy die? I can't even imagine. I love my dog to death and would cry my eyes out if anything happened to her, but Toady doesn't know you, probably hasn't interacted with you much and can't just assume you're telling the truth and not just using that to tug at our heartstrings by way of our wallets.

I know it was for a good cause, I do believe you, and I know you're gonna hate me for saying this because your dog must mean the world to you, but he can't make exceptions when it comes to anything that might threaten his income, since he lives of something like 50,000 a year.

I will say you don't deserve a warning larger than him just reminding you not to do it, though.

I understand him asking me to remove the link, or even removing it himself but deleting the thread and issueing me a warning about it is just a little far.
I've got my loan and she goes into sugery today ASAP. Thanks for the support guys, I'll tell you what happens when it's over.

man, let toady do his thing.

keeping the evergrowing forums in check is a timeconsuming and ungrateful task.

if you are not okay with this warning, well, that's your thing, but do you really have to make a threat like this?
dragging the fight out in public? trying to gather a crowd against the dictator?

if you have an issue with the moderation, discuss this on PM, but seriously, going out on a public rant about how toady is so mean and heartless will not end well for anyone, and nothing is accomplished

his forum, his rules, and also what many people often forget, his consequences when things go to shit.
strict and prejudiced moderation stems from the fact that unlike the users, toady may very well face legal issues (even if not serious ones, but very annoying and time-consuming ones) when stuff happens on the forum.

so if he reads a post, and sees it in a bad light (logic train: you set the precedent asking for money -> more people ask for money -> becomes scam) then he probably has a reason to.

issueing a warning is a little far?

oh come on, a warning is the minimum amount of what he can, and should do.
a friend of mine had a website were people started trading links for illegal torrents, and it eventually got him under investigation.
that's not fun stuff.

I'm glad you were able to get the money. Good luck. Also, probably a bad idea to start off the topic complaining about Toady's actions. Just saying.

You have to start the rebellion through PMs and take over the government in one day.  Trying to do a public resistance will end in destruction.

Akroma speaks the truth. Making this public is just going to make everyone involved look worse. I can't think of one time on this forum where people got up in arms about a modding decision that didn't end badly. Except maybe in the modding forum.

It's unfortunate that you don't have the money, but if Toady doesn't want you to ask for it here then this isn't the place to ask for it. You'll better be using your time trying to raise the money elsewhere. Good luck.
