Ship mode.
« on: July 24, 2011, 01:44:52 am »

Id love to see, in the future, a game mode along side dwarf fortress thats called Ship mode of Boat mode or something. Basically, you get to sail a ship. From island to island. You fight pirates allong the way, recruit crew, repair your ship etc. I recently heard Rainseeker and CapnTastic say that ships will be aded so... Thoughts?

i dont thing that's what the OP meant to say,i've understood the ship being your fortress, not multi-part structures that leaves and enters the fort.but this mult-part structures being the fort itself

Hmm.. designing our own sea-traveling vessels sounds neat.

it would sound neatier if you could design the vessel while on land (with the building menu, and with an auto-complete option) in a city with an shipyard.

no,this would be an "pre-embark","similar to the prepare carefully"  option, and if the player doesn't chooses that he would be choosing a number of default vessels

I like the idea of having a ship as a fortress or having them being able to be built at a fortress and them leaving to explore. But it would probably be pretty hard to actually implement into the game.

agreed...but if you can build a huge multi-part structure that floats and load it up with everything you need to have a functioning fortress & army arc allows you to travel....maybe you could do this?

That would be so amazing to move from place to place WITH your fortress (though dwarfy? hmm...maybe a particular type of especially greedy dwarf) and raid your enemies.

Hmmm... someone somwhere had a similar idea for moving fortress parts. Basically you build your fortress like a giant windpowered/perpetual motion machine powered mech that can walk around the map. I think the ship idea could be a starting point for something like that... But it probably wont happen in the nearest 15 years... Plus, Pirate dwarves? Awesome!

Dwarf Fortress: You have a team of hundreds working for four years to make a game where you save the world again. We have one guy for four years make a near-infinite world generator, write the physics, generate histories, form detailed descriptions of every human, elf, dwarf, and goblin generated, caverns, and huge randomly generated monsters made out of who knows what. You. guys. suck.

I think the concept of ship mode is quite sound, but it needs more fleshing out. Here's how I think it could work:

When you start, you have a certain amount of money, with this money, you have to buy a ship and hire a crew. You would only be able to choose between a few set designs that have been procedurally predesigned in worldgen, the ships you can choose depend on what civilisation you start as.

After choosing you ship, you can choose your crew, this could either be from a list, where they all have pre-determined skills, or it could be just like the current embark screen.

Afterwards, you would choose armaments for your ship, such as catapults and ballistae, as well as small arms (swords, bows etc).

After you start, you could then buy cargo from the town, receive missions and join fleets. This way, you could be a merchant, part of a navy, a pirate. Perhaps you could also start up colonies.

Over time, new ship designs would be made, procedurally, of course. You would also be able to commission a naval architect to design new ships to your specifications, for a price. Maybe you could also make your own designs. You would also be able to upgrade all the parts on the ship, everything on board would have a quality level.

There is one fundamental flaw in this though, and that is that if we are going to be able to zoom down to fortress mode scale, how would ships be able to turn? As we are restricted to our rather blocky grid.

Another, not so fundamental flaw, is that naval combat wasn't very common back then, and when it did happen, there was little ranged combat, it was mostly 2 ships sailing next to each other and boarding each other, which is slightly boring.

Clearly, you don't pay enough attention :P

As of the next update, the game will, by the version number, be ~1/3 complete. The game has been in development for 8 years. At that rate, it will be done 16 years after the next update!

Toady likes to say that it'll be done "in 20 years".

Also, I think the soda thing may be a caffeine addiction. Rather than fixing the sink, it would be better to get him some tea or something.

I know, I sjould ask James from extracredits to go visit him and bring some tea. I know, I like to be optimistic.

@Sockless Yes, I really like the way you explained it. I would love to see what events boat mode would have if this will happen though.  :o
