1st of Granite, Year 6
We've finally arrived in a suitable location, after a few years of searching. The area seems peaceful enough, but that just means we're all gonna die pretty damn soon. I still don't know why the King sent us out for this job. Why didn't he choose the nobles? Were they too squishy? Did they complain too much? Would they request a window made from freaking raindrops or something? From what I've heard about nobles; yes. But still, couldn't he of sent out more experienced dwarves, instead of sending out guards to kidnap random people? By Armok, he must've been drunk. He's probably back at the Mountainhomes right now, saying "Oh shit, what did I just do?"
I spoke to Spizhaben, and according to the King, we are to name the fortress 'Ceilingchew.'
...Yep, he must've been drunk. Or maybe he had a ceiling fetish. Either one would work.
I surveyed our location, and decided to head across the brook to the cliff on the other side. Why? Because right now, we're sitting on a hill of sand and clay. And that's pretty much mud. And living in a hole in a huge slab of rock is more dwarvenly then living in mud, right?
Spizhaben also told me that none of use could swim. Well that's preposterous! What kind of self-respecting dwarf can't swim!
...Okay, every dwarf. But that doesn't matter! What matters is that we can't get across!
Wait a minute! We could just dig down into the mountain behind us, make a tunnel, and get across!
Wait.....
Damn my stupidity!
I immediately ordered the people to go and carve out a few holes in the cliff, and designated some trees to be murdered.
Violently.
16th Granite, Year 6
While Nevyn and C. Man were mining out some rooms for us, I decided that we should head inside to get out of the rain.
...Spizhaben, you idiot. Get out of the caravan.
23rd Granite, Year 6
Bedroom construction has halted, and the miners have located a pool of water right above where part of the hallway would go. I guess it's time to change some plans. At least we got half of the rooms made. Here's the new building plan:
Also, as a warning to anyone who may lead after me; don't expand the large room or the hallway leading to it. I don't know how to swim.
3rd Slate, Year 6
Bedroom construction is up and running again, and Yagor suggested we make some workshops. For once, I actually questioned her insanity. That is, until she recommened a building material. *sigh* How do you make workshops out of a single piece of
charcoal anyway?
10th Slate, Year 6
My comrades are getting stupider every day. I caught someone trying to go fishing in the garbage dump. I still say he should be hammered for his incompetence.
27th Slate, Year 6
The construction of the bedrooms is complete, and work on the catacombs has begun. These two months have been good, if uneventful, and luckily peaceful. Let's hope it stays that way, and that we won't need the catacombs anytime soon.
18th Calcite, Year 6
The catacombs have been dug. Now the walls and floor are being smoothed, and once that's done, I can add some coffins, and dig out two tombs; one for me, and one for the next ruler.
1st Hematite, Year 6
It just turned summer today. The catacombs aren't finished, there are stones all over the fortress, not one bit of the regular fortress has been smoothed, and our supplies are still sitting in the caravan! If we aren't properly up-and-running by autumn, we won't have a damn thing for the traders!
As I write this, there is a large amount of badgers outside. Knowing the rest of the fort, we'll be dead in a week if they stay there.
18th Hematite, Year 6
Hooray! Our population has increased! A wandering miller has joined us! She claims to also be an experienced bowyer and siege engineer, but we'll have to wait and see.
In other news, the catacombs
still aren't finished. Damn the lazy bastard I sent out to do the smoothing!
1st Malachite, Year 6
It's about damn time the stockpile was finished. Lazy bastards and their 'break after taking a drink/nap'. Oh well, at least our booze won't get rained on all the time anymore. Catacombs still aren't finished, and I'm feeling ready to give up on 'em.
3rd Galena, Year 6
It appears I've missed some migrants. We now have a wax worker and a High Master gem setter. Shizhaben, you're fired as a gem setter. We're finally getting some beds in the bedrooms now, but we need more rooms.
I've also concluded that the Overseer's Chambers are too small, so I'm giving them to someone else, and ordering someone to carve out a big room.
Hey, I need some luxuries, right?
13th Galena
Okay, some important news: the trading depot is complete, our military has proven itself useful by killing a fox, we've got all but two bedrooms ready, our caravan is unloaded, and we can now produce (some) coke and iron.
And on the unimportant news list, the catacombs still aren't ready. But you all knew that.
