Non-walking hatch covers
« on: July 23, 2011, 11:34:07 am »

Is it possible to mod in new kinds of buildings? I want to mod in a version of a Hatch Cover that fulfills the same role that a floodgate does for a door - one that's not supposed to be walked through, but still can be opened or closed by mechanisms.

IIRC only custom workshops can be modded in currently.

you can link a hatch cover to a lever and shut it as long as you like.
and what do you mean by "walked through" on the same level or different?

Can bridges retract when covered with water?

Exactly. Ethics in DF are very realistic - trivial and pointlessly selectively ex/inclusive.

A hatch cover can be walked through if there are stairs or a ramp. In fact, that is what they are designed for. And linking a hatch cover to a lever doesn't protect it from ghosts, which is what I'm looking for - while a door can be opened by ghosts, a floodgate cannot.

Just use retracting bridges, they're like hatches but can only be opened via levers. Or lock the hatches.

In regards to Lezard's question, yes, and this is how many drowning traps work.

Including my own. Brooks are great for this sort of thing.

You can build a floodgate under a grate if you want the same effect as a hatch but without anyone being able to walk through it when open.  If you do want access when open, use a bridge as suggested.

When a hatch cover is linked to a mechanism, it cannot be opened or closed by a passing dwarf.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

But it still can be by a ghost, which is why I was looking for this in the first place.

I guess a retracting bridge comes closest to what I was looking for. Thanks guys!

By Armok's beard, thought that with the thread title you actually had hatch covers as a moving animal.

MOD IDEA!
