Dutch prisons
« on: July 22, 2011, 10:22:25 pm »

Been browsing around today, and stumble upon something amazing. The Dutch are actually shutting down prisons due to under population. Apparently they currently have enough to hold 14,000 but there are only 12,000 detainees. This is directly related to the declining crime rate. My mind was blown.

Has anyone else heard of this?

here's the source. http://vorige.nrc.nl/international/article2246821.ece/Netherlands_to_close_prisons_for_lack_of_criminals

P.S. Did not notice this was news from 2009, oh well. Still pretty amazing, that.

From the other articles linked, there seemed to be two problems that the Dutch government faced. One group of politicians wants those who have tracking collars but are out of prison to be in prison, but there also seems to be a deal being made with Belgium such that these empty prisons would hold belgian criminals.

If I were ruling a country, I would build prisons everywhere and offer to let Americans house their prisoners there.

I would probably let Canada in on the action, too, but the Conservatives are really keen on having their own prison.

Australia should do this.

They could integrate them into society in a couple of years and only see the crime rate go up 0.1%.

No, that's what we get other countries to do.

Yeah, so long as they didn't arrive on boats; Tony Abbott would scream so hard his eyes burst.

Fake edit: Referencing that guy we deported to the UK a while ago?

Isnt it ironic that less than two years later one of the Netherlands most succesful politicians is the fear mongering we-need-more-safety and we-need-longer-sentences sort?

Well, why do you think he's popular? Quite a few people work at the prisons they were going to shut down :P
