Hows the map size? That was one complaint I was reading on steam forums is people asking for bigger maps.

I thought Tropico 4 had pretty tiny maps, but some of the map mods had decent sized islands to build on.

Due to a combination of archipelago and topography the map size did feel rather snug, but that was playing on a preset 'medium' map. That was also before they released the random map generator.

I'll try out a large-size map this weekend; looking at the Steam workshop there are already maps available, and I guess they go up to 'huge'?

Edit: adding this here instead of double-posting. A 'huge' map is indeed sizable, but it's not going to be a giant flat pancake - still need planning to make the most of the geography you have.

Tropico 6 is both a continuation of the classic formula as well as a new twist all its own.  You -can- play on either a single large island or a bunch of smaller ones, using the map generator.  This in itself has changed up the game a bit, because you have to do some real planning this time around.

There's a very real limit to how far your population will move to work, to get food, or to find entertainment.  If you place a mine quite far away from teh rest of your city, you'll have to build infrastructure, housing, and everything else around it as well.  Add in the limitations of actually transporting materials around, and you'll basically have to plan out mini-cities based around the resources and industries you place there.

This is even more pronounced with all the islands you can settle.  It's similar to the ANNO games, except you can connect everything with bridges and whatnot.  It's a delicate balance between population management, resource management, transportation management and finances.  Unlike Tropico 5, where if you are smart you can spam a lot of industry and whatnot, in Tropico 6 you have to be smart about where you place things and how you want the bits and pieces to develop.  After all, you only have so much space to put up additional houses for all the workers, leaving room for beauty (gardens) options, entertainment businesses (which require even MORE population), schools and ect.  Missing out on these can really mess things up as you try to balance the politics too.

That said, the game is missing tools that'd be quite helpful.  Like a traffic spotlight and whatnot.  Lol.  Oh, and modding.  Tropico 5 has some nice mods, and I'm hoping they can get translated over to Tropico 6 sometime here soon too~  Haha.

Anyway, rant end.

Well put. Public transit (or free cars, if you have enough money lying around) can help some with travel times, but one still can't make a singular population center. And it's usually easy enough to see when something is off - shacks will bubble up around the jobs buildings even if better housing is elsewhere.

Still a little miffed about the (seeming) necessity of heavy industry, but based on some playtime with 1.0 I am quite liking it. They've even added some nice additional quality-of-life stuff since the prior beta I played.

You can always just give everyone free cars and lovely neighborhoods and then toll the hell out of them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N53ocygtRJg

Hah, that's pretty great. Toll station density aside, I actually like that one can approach the game that way - note that it took him 50+ years to do, so not like it's a short-cut.

I do wonder how he held onto power with such a low approval rating, though. Even at the end his approval rating is in the teens with nearly half the country being rich enough to vote under his constitution.

Don't know if any of that was changed in the 1.0 release version (he's playing beta there), or if the final era (he stayed in cold war) makes that more difficult.

Edit: Oh, one more minor thing. In 1.0 there are options to increase max colony size beyond what he encountered. Haven't fiddled with the option, but it's there.

Somehow, I knew that was The Spiffing Brit even before clicking.

So I put some time into a modern era sandbox game.  Set all the difficulty levels to max.

Most of the first 30some years was spent with less then 20% approval ratings.  I had a yuge population of guerrillas and rebels.  But they were not really a threat, given that all they ever did was set fire to buildings.  A minor annoyance once I figured out how to direct them to burning non-essential buildings.

Then my commandos finally dropped the happiness levels of my neighbors below me and people are now beginning to approve of me.(I did start on that a little late.)

I was expecting a lot more dying by violence, but I expect a good portion of my population died in fires instead.
And who needs education when you can 'rescue' educated folks.  Or I guess there is that landmark which negates the need to even have high schools.
