It's basically the same, actually, just more colorful. You know what, no, I like the addition of a more colorful palette, I take back what I said.
What I don't like is that the ground textures actually look like someone painted shrubs onto the ground. I hope they fix that, it looks silly.

But yes, you're right. Tropico 3 was fantastic fun and I don't see how they could have improved on that too much. But at the same time, is that an excuse for mediocrity or stagnation? I don't think so. I don't think there is an excuse.

Yeah, the ground texture bugged me as well, but just a bit. However, the fact that you can zoom into the jungle and see the separate (well not really separate but kinda) leaves of every tree is just plain cool. Also, try to move the camera below a mountain where the sun shines just over it, you'll see the trees make "rays" of light. It's very cool. What I like less is that the "alert" icons are really physical objects, casting shadows on my buildings. It kinda ruins the immersion (yes, I occasionally go down and "walk" through my cities).

I like the more vivid colors, but from other screenshots it looks like the "coloring" changes with the light. There's more greyish misty islands (or does it change with the weather?) as well.

I'm kinda sad though that they still don't have a remotely easy way to play this in windowed mode. It's probably the one feature I've wanted in Tropico 3 the most.

Indeed, I hope they have an option to slow it down (I didn't see such an option in the demo, so I sort of doubt it).

I like the subquests from faction leaders, kind of like catering to special interests in the real world.  Especially the part where the faction leaders give you money, ask you to do something, then respect you more for actually doing it.   ;D
How do they get the money to pay me?  Surely they are no citizen of mine if they have such spending power...   ....  Treason!

Also yea, Juanito and Betty both got annoying after awhile....  Unlike the T1 host... these 2 had a grade A annoying quality.

Given the entire point of the game (a vacation paradise made on the backs of your people) I am surprised the previous games used such dark colors.

Well, those tenements are supposed to look like shitholes. I'd like it if the colours changed with your policies. A polluting ugly town gets grey and gloomy and a pretty tourist town with lots of trees and happy people gets more colour.

Ehhh I'd still would like it to be ironic.

Like when the Simpsons were in Brazil and they walked by the shanty town that was painted bright colors.

You are technically supposed to keep the slums out of the tourist area....  or the tourists out of the slums.

That is just about what EVERY place with a significant population does.

I did enjoy the demo but it's definitely not worth full price. It's probably worth $15/€15 as an expansion to T3.

The only real changes are: hiring ministers, the option to import goods, more superpowers and added side quests.

By the way: on the official forums they mentioned that the demo shipped with lower quality textures, so that's the reason people have been complaining about it (dumb move imo).

Well, and you get 20 more missions yay.

Which I find disappointingly few. I hope the random mission/island generator has been fixered-upped a bit, to make the random missions more interesting and last longer.

I like it, but in all honesty there isn't that much difference between Tropico 1, 3 and 4.

Buy it if you're new to the series, otherwise it's just more of the same.

Would you prefer that the developers fly off on some strange tangent and make a completely different game? Because, ya know, last time they tried that we got Tropico 2.  :P

In their defense, however, making a very good game better is quite hard. Having "real" goals instead of vague ones ("better housing for everyone!"... okay, how much better?) is the best addition so far. I haven't noticed too much change in the graphical style. Perhaps I haven't been paying attention? The lighting is awesome though.

Actually, you could mouse over the T3 goals to get more detailed descriptions (at least in AP... don't know if it was in the base game, too). "Better housing for everyone!" mouses over to reveal "Have fewer than 20 shacks on the island," for example. Still no clue what "Aligned towards capitalism/communism" meant, though, but most of them were explained pretty precisely.  ;)

It kinda makes sense - consider how many people even on these forums complain about large downloads. A small demo makes it more likely that people will download it on a lark, enjoy it, and buy it.

Small? It's over a gig!

Anyway, since I haven't bought any Tropico games before, I might just buy this one because they're awesome, and pretend that makes up for not paying for my previous plays  :-X

Hmm...so Tropico 3 was good, you say? And this is basically 3+?

I must investigate this. Loved the first one, saw what they did to Tropico 2 and just kinda avoided eye contact with the franchise after that.

Never got around to playing any of the Tropico games, despite the fact that I'd probably enjoy them. Do you think I should get this one, or is one of the previous ones considered the 'best'?
