sure he just never left?

things are supposed to "vanish" from the world when they leave the map.

Never happened to me,
but something similar:

I had a goblin general leading an invasion army during a siege.
Well, when too many goblins lost their lives or were captured due to my traps
he (and the remnants of his army) fled the battlefield.
But not for long...
the next season he appeared again, with an army larger than the last one :D
(if I remember correctly he lost his life in this 2nd siege ;) )

As for the ambusher in the opening post.
It somehow reminds me of a certain episode in Battlestar Galactica (about a scarred  Elite Cylon Raider) :D

you sure it's the same guy and not another position?

i mean, you dont even keep the same diplomats, year to year.

I am absolutely sure ...
whenever gobline "nobles" take part in ambushes I check the goblin civilization screen to find them in the nobles list
and this goblin was the only general of the whole goblin civilization...
well, to be more specific, he was the only noble besides the lawgiver.

This, coupled with the fact that both generals who attacked me bore the same name,
lets me conclude that they both were the same guy

I believe this has happened to me as well in the current version.  You're right that it's weird, what with liasons losing their position or whatever they do.  And generals and law-makers and anybody else who enters my map disappears forever after as well.  But I had a scrawny little crossbowman crawl off my map without the use of either leg, and I think it was him that came back the next season.  But mostly I think that because goblins don't generally send out paraplegic crossbowmen.  Maybe they do.  I don't know.  Can't remember if there was other identifying information on that guy.

hrm.....  perhaps it somehow did not completely leave the map?

i've just heard it said many times that the reason things "vanish" when they leave the map is because, behind the scenes, they really die.

i'm not sure, but i would like to know what makes these guys so special they come back, when there is no chance for me to actually fight the clown that used to lead the local goblins (bastard showed up the second siege.  denies me of fighting a "ringmaster" when i actually stand a chance, plus mounted gobbos)

I think it's less likely that it never left the map than that it happened to be a different legless goblin.  I mean, we're talking a few seasons between sieges here, and I don't let goblins leave the map without at least trying to hunt them down.

I think it's reasonable to assume that historical figures are treated differently than non-historical figures.  I mean, it's buggy anyways, they're not supposed to disappear (die or whatever, who knows, in legends they're "replaced.")  I'm not totally sure, but I think maybe it tries to keep escapees as returning siegers/ambushers, even if they're not quite historical (no kills) in the hope that they one day will be historical.  My goblin wasn't even an elite, just a regular old dude, but he came back (I think he came back) as a squad leader, without any kills, so he wouldn't even count as historical.

Don't pick returning legless veterans to lead your sieges, btw.  If you're ever a goblin law-giver.  It just doesn't work out well.

I had human law giver visit my fortress and in adventure mode I met same lawgiver who was now regular spearman o-o

Its kind of dumb that every kind of diplomat loses their possession after visiting you, that means you can have demons ruling humans visit you, lose their position and recruit them in adventure mode.

Not sure if you were talking for me, but its silly that demon who has been ruling human civilization for hundreds of years posing as their god would resign from his position because he visited Dwarfs  :P
