The extreme amount of food and beverage consumed by the dwarf and the beard obviously leaves the never-bathing dwarves to have a rather... noxious aura. This also explains why elves are easier to kill; their sense of smell is better so they're affected by the stench even more.

Why do dwarves never delve into philosophy or ask serious questions? (Of course, necromancers who write books on interesting topics are not including in the 'dwarf' category)
[By the way, I can't even follow what questions have or haven't been asked yet, but search turned up only one similar question]

Most civilizations do not approve of such time wasting, so the only scholars in the land that aren't keeping records have to abandon society and make friends with the dead because nobody likes them. [Most people probably don't read the entire thread, so it shouldn't matter too much]

Why can catapults only hit targets on the same z level?

Each z-level can be thought of as layerd but separate dimensions, with each plane only interacting with the others near it in three different, limited ways: stairs, ramps, and the dimensional displacement phenomenon hereafter referred to as the Feb Effect that occurs when objects in projectile motion occasionally have a component of velocity in the z-direction. Individual creatures have only partial perception of these phenomena, being capable of perceiving, in a limited sense, the immediate area surrounding a ramp or stair. They are also able to aim projectiles at targets on other nearby z-dimensions through estimation based on distortion in the empty floor and ceiling space, but with increasing difficulty as the dimensions grow more and more distant and visual artifacts grow more faint.

Siege weapons are, technically speaking, constructions. This means that they, like others, only have presence on a single z-level. Their inherent two dimensional nature makes it impossible for them to be adjusted to take advantage of the Feb Effect. To compensate for this, Dwarven engineers give the siege engine tremendous mechanical power. This both allows them to fire much farther than the average operator can actually see and, in the case of catapults, actually gives the projectile sufficient energy to bend space around it. It is theorized that this is the result of a fractional bending of dimensional space, such that the catapult shot moves beyond it's original z-dimension, but does not quite reach the one "above" it. A side effect of this phenomenon can be observed in the massive loss of velocity, and therefore killing power, of the catapulted projectile upon reaching it's target.

Why do siege engines only require three of a generic [engine] part to build?

Shearing Trolls, and gathering silk to make socks. Occasionally milking the trolls because trolls like to be milked, and it distracts them for shearing.

Why don't dwarves make knives?

Dwarves don't believe in the underhanded tactics a knife encourages, just as they don't think it's fair to other civilizations to craft whips or scourges. The goblins and humans have no such inhibitions however, and will gladly make all of the above and perhaps sell them/die and leave them behind to less stubborn dwarves...

Trolls live in caverns because that's where Goblins have domesticated them. Like a Golden Retriever enjoying water, even escaped or feral Trolls now enjoy loving in caverns.

Why are Ocelot's trainable as Hunting or War Animals but Hyenas are not?

Dwarven trainers spend enough time with Ocelots until it adopts him,Hyenas however,are canine so they don't adopt their trainers.

Why do Dwarfs go on break/party even if there's a fort threatening crisis?
