The goblins have diplomat-magnets.

Why don't dwarves make wall mounted traps?

How do traps reset themselfs?

Thanks to a complicated dwarven set of self propelling rock mechanisms.

How in heck did that huge snail made out of snow survived in that scorching desert?

How do you know how many goblins are there in an ambush, if it was detected by a rooster?

What would cause the game to increase my population from ~9-10 to 26 in a SINGLE migrant wave?

K's: The rooster is trained to crow for as many seconds as there are goblins.
M's: That's entirely normal. You can get 20 or more pretty often if you rapidly increase your wealth.

If a dwarf became a mage, what would his -mancy be?

But you never see a movie where a terrible coal plant accident causes a horrible devastation, do you? Nope, everyone seems to think that nuclear plants get their energy by smacking live atomic warheads all day or something.

Because forgotten beasts don't have beards for cats to mind-control, duh.

Why did one of my dwarfs apparently make a drum from the baby of another dwarf?

Because obviously the drum was more useful than that baby. Or the price of baby leather was increased recently?

Why don't the goblins ever give up? Also, why does it seem like they never run out of population?

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

Why the hell does miasma keep pouring out of my butcher every five seconds?  I don't even HAVE any animals in that room!  And there's no jobs queued up to bring any in!

In order: Because they breed quickly, dur.
Because there are flesh bits inside the butcher that noone has moved to a stockpile of any sort, causing it to rot. Now if you had stockpiles for food, a cook and kitchen, and leatherworker/tanner, that'd be cleared up quickly.

Why are dragons so rare for me? I have yet to encounter even one.

I have multiple stockpiles for everything.

But there's still meat in the butchery, or else there wouldn't be a miasma. . Just, err, woman up and either let it sit or see if you can get some free dwarf to make it into food. A kitchen and tanner are both really useful regardless.

I've been making lavish meals by the barrel-load lol.  Apparently I made my fortress TOO self-sufficient in the food department, with easy access to fishing (my well is directly connected to a river and never seems to run out of fish), plump helmets, a fertilized strawberry field, and the occasional cavern monster butchering.

I think the miasma might have been from draltha now...
