Because !!science!! is intrinsic to the universe. Technology must be created. And Who ever finds enough uses for an engineer to make them good enough to pioneer new tech?

And why aren't my hospital staff (who aren't currently assigned to any task) fixing up my stream of injured dwarves, despite their fully equipped hospital?

Lawsuits in dwarven court are excuses to hand out hammerings, to both parties.  Scary.

Why do dwarves even bother to make fortresses rathar than pillage another race's?

Forbidden by the treaty of -'03, just a bit before each world's creation.

Why doesn't forbidding empty cage traps make the dwarves hauling cages realize they should stop trying to load said forbidden traps?

Cause the "forbidden" signs are attached to the cage traps in question, and the dwarves only come to read it when they are right there where they shouldnt be.

Why do DF volcanoes never errupt?
