Is unlocking my fps the best thing I've done?
« on: July 22, 2011, 11:41:11 am »

After fiddling in init files, I found my fps line. So cracked that bad boy to 0, for unlimited fps. As a fan of tiny forts, I don't really get over 9000 dwarves, so when I see my pop cap full and the fps part of my screen viewing like "FPS: 34858483 (50)" I cream.

Any downsides to this? I know my fort will age spectacularly fast, that again suits me.

Easier way:

Download Lazy Noob Pack. Set Max FPS = 0. Done. No INI fiddling. But go on.

I do tend to lower site cap tough.

LNP is just editing the init files for you, man.

It is literally the same thing.

Sorry to burst your bubble,  but did you happen to have the game paused when you saw that?

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

It's actually a bad thing.

Cap it at 60 -> You process things at 60fps and the rest of your processor goes to other calculations, rendering, blah blah blah.
Uncapped -> It tries to take the FPS as high as possible regardless of other stuff.

That's not possible inless your single processor runs at well over 1000 THz. It's because of the way the game calculates fps, it skyrockets when the game is paused and takes a bit of time to even out, because what you see is actually the average over a certain amount of time.

Such huge FPS is only possible when paused.
FPS display uses a rolling average so it will still show huge number even several seconds after unpausing.
