As an alternative, I'm sure there's a few people around here willing to enter indentured servitude to Toady for the rest of their lives.

Anybody?

Please do not try to tell Toady how to live, that usually ends up with long pages of arguments about sexism.

I quite enjoyed the last sentences of the article.  They made me feel hopeful.

If Toady really cares about Dwarf Fortress, and this isn't some meth-like escape from the world indulgence, he needs to pursue 'The Middle Way' as they say. That's what the project needs.

This may or may not be true, but it's really his own business how he lives, not ours.

I like how Toady points out how many video games are little more than Skinner Boxes.  In many ways DF not including skinner box style mechanics inhibits mainstream appeal.  It's fun to many of us because we can create and design whatever we want.  However the game does little to reward our efforts.  Created Wealth is the only score and it is kinda meaning less.   Meanwhile we can construct huge and beautiful structures, if we could ever figure out exactly how to do it.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Leopard?

But yeah, I believe Toady can think for his own when it comes to his personal life.

Not L but on par with him atleast.

Anyway what perplexed me was this little gem:

Quote
“The processing power that Dwarf Fortress uses is on the same scale as modern engineering software for designing aerospace hardware,” says Ames, the engineer. “You have more complicated simulations in Dwarf Fortress than when you model the aerodynamics of a wing.”

Now i fully grasp why Toady is not trying to get his stuff Multithreaded - it would take many Months if not years. It also shocking how complex some of the game mechanics are  :o . This makes me even more curious about the inner workings of DF - there is so much one could learn from it. I just hope toady keeps a good documentation and writes a book along the lines of "The grand Simulation - How to write a detailed world explained with Dwarf fortress" i would buy it.

In maybe 100 or 200 years from now Df could be seen as one of the great artworks of our time much like the paintings from the renaisance right now.

This is a New York Times article. It is of the highest quality. On the item is an image of the life of a game programmer and his sidekick in text. The game programmer is pleased with the life. The sidekick is surprisingly happy.

I'm just glad this works so well.
