Eggs Won't Hatch
« on: July 21, 2011, 09:23:47 pm »

Is there some way to mod where eggs would be fertilized 100% of the time? It seems like my eggs are NEVER fertilized,  despite having 8 females on embark. Or, is there something wrong with my creature?

EDIT: I do have a male, so that's not this issue.

You need to have at least one male in addition to those females, or the eggs won't be fertilized.

Yeah, sorry, I do have one. I just meant that, you'd think at least ONE of those females would be fertilized.

Try bringing only one of each gender. No children.

IIRC fertilizing eggs is a little buggy at the moment, in that a lot of people have difficulty with getting it to work.

Are you making sure that the eggs stay in the nest boxes, and the females stay sitting on the egg, until they hatch?  The eggs won't hatch if you let your dwarves move them to a stockpile.  I'm petty sure the female needs to sit on the next box for the entire gestation period too.

Yep. An entire year passed with all 8 females sitting on their eggs, nothing happened.

Seeing that you have the appropriate child tags in your spider, then it's safe to say that you need to dispose of those eggs, and make those buggers lay another set.

There's a chance where the eggs don't fertilize at all, and the only way to reset the whole thing is to throw the nest boxes' contents.

What's the average time period to wait before they hatch? The wiki says 2 seasons, but I just want to make sure. I copied and pasted the Turkey egg RAWs, so it should be the same length as that.

I think it's 2 seasons. Also, I think the egg birthrates are hardcoded, so no editing on how fast eggs will hatch.

Like many of my posts concerning game mechanics, I might be wrong.

I have seen claims that egg hatching time is dependent on the egg's size, though I don't know whether or not this is actually true. Science is encouraged.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

You could just use a utility(dfusion) to speed up the hatch process to instant.
