Captain's Log, Dwarfdate too sober to care

I've been sober for one whole day and that's two days too many! I've ordered more Stills to be dug out and every kind of plant we have to be brewed but still nothing is happening! Is this place cursed? I have to out what's going on!

"You there, stop picking those berries like an elf and tell me why no one is digging out a Still!"

"Likely because we've all been told to gather plants"

"We have plenty of plants and no one to brew them! Just how many of you are out here coddling these shrubs?"

"I'd say about a dozen of us"

"A doz...! That's almost a quarter of the fort!"

"Well we were told to pick the entire hill clean"

"What?!"

"Yes sir, by golly we won't stop until we've gotten every last shrub off the entire 3 Z levels of surface, even the ones in areas we can't possibly reach!"

(Seriously, 3 entire Z levels were designated to gather plants, even in areas cut off by the river we'd need to build yet another bridge just to get to! Canceling the vast majority of the designations was one of the first things I did)

"Stop it right now! We need new rooms mined and pots made for drinks! don't you have any talented Miners or Stonecrafters?"

"We have a Legendary Miner and a Legendary Stonecrafter"

"Great, where are they?"

"Picking berries"

 :'(

"That's it, no more of this nonsense! We are building more Stills and making more pots right now!"

(I have no idea about the layout here so I'm making this whole layer a food layer and moving the other stockpile upstairs)

(We had a dwarf decorating with shell instead of making pots! DX Unless he's making booze from that shell this needs to be fixed!)

(We have 55 uncut gems and our jeweler is doing nothing. I fixed this by MAKING HIM DO SOMETHING!)

(Started walling off the caverns to keep dwarfs safe. this is the easiest part, walling off around that 9 times staircase is going to be tougher. Switched to Tetrahedrite to get copper for bins and other cheap metal things while hopefully getting silver as a bonus (smelting Tetrahedrite has a 20% chance of creating extra silver bars). Made a stockpile for ore around the smelter, the huge distance from the other stockpiles will be a problem. Also going to build more smelters and forges (need to find Iron ASAP to make Anvils). We need a barracks down here because unless I abandon this area and build somewhere else this channel can and will be invaded by magma creatures)

(This one was tough. I really want to keep making Barrels for alcohol but almost half our dwarfs don't have a place to sleep!

Oh, the cages?

...

We're catching us some turkeys. 8)

At least I'll try once I make a Mechanic's Workshop to build cage traps and a Kennel to tame things, because we don't have either of those!)

(The kennel is also important because we have one dog left we can train as a War Dog. I'm going to go after the turkeys, but if I fail I'll still make Nest Boxes for our ducks. I made a Pasture for the other animals. I also don't like our fortress having so many different entrances, when I get the Mechanic's workshop up I'll try to turn all our bridges into drawbridges.)

Finally, and most importantly:

"I don't care if we don't have any barrels! I'll drink it straight from the tap!"

(I did various other clean up projects, creating stockpiles and changing the settings on other stockpiles, setting the Glass Furance to repeatedly collect Sand, etc. I'm trying to document important things and places via these posts, and in-game using hotkeys and notes. It's only 4:30 AM this time but I'll try to get up and get started on the next update early tomorrow. I'm actually finally going to unpause the game, woo! ^^)

Instead of barrels, make one dwarf, set his job to stonecrafting, and have him make rock pots /R in the craftsdwarf shop.  Rock Pots work exactly the same as barrels, and use the material most forts have FAR too much of.  :D

This is something else I did not know. Thank you!

Not a problem.  It was an amazing thing that Toady added.  Wood is only really used for beds now, though bins still need to be made from wood until they can be made from metal.  No stone bins.. yet.

Tarn must be weaning us from the surface. Perhaps he is encouraging us to live a more dwarven lifestyle?

Finding a cavern nice enough to live in is not as common as I would like. I have not bothered overmuch with the cavern variables just yet, but I prefer not having too steep a slope, or the twisting labrynthine corridors.

Yea, the twisting corridors is what usually makes me not want to go down in there either.  However, changing that in world generation is rather easy.  In advanced parameters, look for "Min Cavern Openness" and change it to somewhere around 90 or 100, and the caverns from there will be nice and open.

Crustypeanut, I screenshoted switching the Craftdwarf to Rock Pots on repeat last update. I will probably never change it for the entire year. XD

It's finally time! I'm finally going to unpause this game and kick it into high gear! Ready? 1...2...3...Spacebar!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Seriously, I'm getting a hang of the ASCII and I've been making notes and hotkeys to help out. Finishing up all the prep work. I tried to wall off the caverns the keep our dwarfs safe but because of what's previously done the only way to do it is if dwarfs could walk on magma so I don't know if there will be any point to it. Speaking of magma:

Our magma smelter can make the only kind of bronze that can't be used for weapons and armor. That means the only weaponized metals we have are copper and silver.

Also:

The only underground plantable seed we have besides plump Helmets is Sweet pods, and we have only five. I'm digging out a new farm for them so we'll be able to brew something besides wine. Those all and 3 stills should get us enough to drink I hope!

Honestly I've still been really nervous but I appreciate the feedback and I'm playing through as much of the year as possible today. Next update will include the action.

For all of your wonderful prepwork, Basque, I have a sinking feeling that we're going to be sieged not ten minutes into your unpaused turn. :P

I have the very distinct feeling that any siegers would take one look into Basque's eye and see their inevitable doom, and simply run away.

If it was not going to happen before you said something, it will now.

"Enough waiting around! I need a drink now dammit, we're digging out more stills! Strike the Earth!"

"We already did that"

"Strike it HARDER!"

"Yes! Finally my precious alcohol and I will be together again! Now all we need is to hurry and construct the...

"RARGH! No Goblin will get between me and my alcohol!"

(Seriously, on the 3rd day. As far as I can tell he just spawned little right in the back entrance to the fortress too. So it looks like we get to test our brand new military way sooner than I intended. Go Oracular Daggers!)

And how well did our new mighty military fare against this lone enemy intruder?

...

He ran away and they couldn't keep up. ::) Note to self: get those drawbridges up after the booze problem is fixed (and after I build a Mechanics workshop to actually do it.

And I'm truly sorry about taking so long to get into the actual action, but all the prep work was indeed worth it:

It's been 4 days and we now have 2 Craftdwarf workshops constantly making rock pots, a new Jeweler's Workshop (deconstructed the old one and move it) and 2 Stills, 1 Kitchen, another Mason's Workshop and another Farm Plot going up. The miners are going down to clear out some of the area around the magma for more Magma Smelters, other Magma Furnaces and Magma Forges as soon as we find Iron.

I'll post more updates as stuff happens! Please let me know if anyone has any requests on what to see or anything else. Thanks again for putting up with me! ^^

Edit: Saw the new posts. XD Not a siege thank God, but imagine my face when a Goblin appears inside our fortress on Day 3.

Edit 2, Edit with a Vengeance: I noticed some of our Miners weren't mining despite me having spent several hours fixing all the labors for all of of dwarfs. Try to guess why, then check the spoiler.
