Draining pond with fish
« on: July 21, 2011, 09:05:06 am »

In my terrifing montain+haunted grassland I ended up with a couple of pools filled with various sorts of fish, in the midle of nowere, surrounded by zombies, etc, etc. Question is, will the fish survive if I drain the pools to a underground, safer location?

Should do.  I've had fish survive getting flushed into my reservoir from a cavern lake.

Are the fish 'vermin' size fish?  If so, it doesn't matter if you drain the pond or not.  Vermin size fish teleport around between bodies of water randomly, so if they can exist in the underground location at all they'll appear there eventually.  If you forcibly move vermin fish from the surface into an underground pond they'll eventually vanish, possibly reappearing in a surface pond.

If you're asking if you can make a safe underground fishing location this way, the answer is no.  What kind of fish if any a fisherdwarf catches is unrelated to the presence of actual vermin fish creatures in the water, rather it depends on the biome the fisherdwarf is standing in.  If you pump water from the surface to make an underground fishing pool, you still won't be able to catch surface fish in it.

I was hoping that someone had finally outfitted a fish with plumbing and was using the actual fish to drain the water out of the pond they were swimming in...

But yes, Sphalerite has it right as ever.  Vermin fish don't care.  Large fish will be moved, but they don't occur in ponds.  Fishing zones don't care.

Considering what I see in the shop everyday, I'd say yes. Except, this is DF we are talking about.

Well, if they are "real" fish (actual creatures that show up in the units screen) then they will air-drown unless they are zombies or skeletons, then they can just clamber out of the water and attack everything. If they're vermin then draining the pond should do absolutely nothing, they'll just vanish without a trace, no remains or anything.

How do they work out when there are no fish left in ponds? I thought it was based on vermin populations =/

The stupid way, more like. You can't fish in obsidian.

No, but you can mine obsidian.  And what's more dwarven than mining for fish?

Necro would be proud of you.

What's wrong with using magma? That's almost always the easiest method.
I have issues channeling it properly to do that method. I end up flooding the fortress with magma.
