ranged weapons and skills: attempting some dwarven science
« on: July 21, 2011, 08:43:41 am »

Just was in the mood for doing some experiments, and modded these two weapons in:
Quote
[ITEM_WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_BOW_LONG]
[NAME:bow:bows]
[ADJECTIVE:long]
[SIZE:300]
[SKILL:SWORD]
[RANGED:BOW:ARROW]
[SHOOT_FORCE:1200]
[SHOOT_MAXVEL:1200]
[TWO_HANDED:0]
[MINIMUM_SIZE:40000]
[MATERIAL_SIZE:4]
[ATTACK:BLUNT:10000:4000:bash:bashes:NO_SUB:1250]

[ITEM_WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_BOW_SHORT]
[NAME:bow:bows]
[ADJECTIVE:short]
[SIZE:200]
[SKILL:SWORD]
[RANGED:BOW:ARROW]
[SHOOT_FORCE:600]
[SHOOT_MAXVEL:600]
[TWO_HANDED:0]
[MINIMUM_SIZE:15000]
[MATERIAL_SIZE:2]
[ATTACK:BLUNT:10000:4000:bash:bashes:NO_SUB:1000]

Now for the arena tests.
Team 1 uses short bows, Team 2 uses long bows. 10 goblins in each team.

Round 1 and 3: all goblins are unskilled, wooden ammo.
 - Team 2 wins, 7 survivors.
 - Team 2 wins, 8 survivors.

Round 2 and 4: All goblins have "adept" skills in "bowman" and "archer", wooden ammo.
 - Team 1 wins, 3 survivors.
 - Melee ensues, 3 survivors on team 1 and 4 survivors on team 2.

Round 5 and 6: All goblins are unskilled, iron ammo.
 - Team 2 wins, 6 survivors
 - Melee ensues, team 1 has 5 survivors, team 2 has 2 survivors.

Round 7 and 8:  All goblins have "adept" skills in "bowman" and "archer", iron ammo.
- Team 2 wins, 4 survivors.
- Team 1 wins, 7 survivors.

===New data===
Rounds 9 to 14 - All unskilled, all wood ammo, 20v20:
9) Team 2 wins with 11 survivors (55%)
10) Team 2 wins with 10 survivors (50%)
11) Team 1 wins with 14 survivors (70%)
12) Team 2 wins with 11 survivors (55%)
13) Team 2 wins with 5 survivors (25%)
14) Team 1 wins with 11 survivors (55%)

Rounds 15 to 20 - All unskilled, all wood ammo, 10v10:
15) Team 1 wins with 4 survivors (40%)
16) Team 1 wins with 8 survivors (80%)
17) Team 1 wins with 5 survivors (50%)
18) Team 1 wins with 4 survivors (40%)
19) Team 1 wins with 4 survivors (40%)
20) Team 1 wins with 6 survivors (60%)

Rounds 21 to 25 - All unskilled, all iron ammo, 10v10.
21) Team 2 wins with 1 survivor (10%)
22) Team 1 wins with 2 survivors (20%)
23) Team 2 wins with 6 survivors (60%)
24) Team 2 wins with 4 survivors (40%)
25) Team 2 wins with 3 survivors (30%)

New data is strange. What is puzzling me the most is why in 20v20 team2 tends to win, while in 10v10 team1 always won.
Overall though the SHOOT_FORCE and SHOOT_MAXVEL alone didn't seem to make much difference so far - for the good at least.

Could some fellow dwarven scientists help with the analysis?

I hate to be a stickler, but there are hardly enough data points here for meaningful analysis. I'd run more trials and see how the outcomes average out.

I'm doing more rounds with more goblins right now. I'll post the results shortly.

It is sad but you are right. You need at least 100 runs.

And magma ammo. As an unbiased sample.

Isn't that impossible?

Well I DID drown the survivors in magma, to save time - it's much quicker than reloading the arena.

Still 100 rounds... do you know any tips to speed up the process?

You're not using enough magma.

Isn't that especially impossible?

Could possibly build a custom arena where you can have multiple battles happening at once while they are walled off from the others.

You don't need a 100 rounds. Just use enough tests to make sure it is conclusive, the more the better.

However, try using smaller test groups. 1v1 is the most accurate as it's less prone to the creatures ganging up on survivors.

If anyone is still interested, I took your advice and done some tests - split the arena in 126 blocks, in which 1v1 duels were carried out.

Results: (126 duels):

Rounds 1, 2, 3, all unskilled, all wood, weapon data as above.
Team 1 (short bows): 64 survivors
Team 2 (long bows): 62 survivors

Team 1 (short bows): 65  survivors
Team 2 (long bows): 61  survivors

Team 1 (short bows): 51  survivors
Team 2 (long bows): 75  survivors

Round 4: 123 duels (3 cells messed up and cleansed), all wood, adept skills:
Team 1 (short bows): 65  survivors
Team 2 (long bows): 57  survivors

Round 5, all wood, adepts skills:
Team 1 (short bows): 67 survivors
Team 2 (long bows): 59 survivors

Round 6, all wood, grandmaster skills:
Team 1 (short bows): 69 survivors
Team 2 (long bows): 56 survivors

Round 7, all wood, grandmaster skills:
Team 1 (short bows):  survivors
Team 2 (long bows):  survivors

Will be testing shortly:
- Iron ammo, unskilled;
- Iron ammo, skilled.
