Card Hunter : The Only Online CCG MMO
« on: July 20, 2011, 05:17:31 am »

Looks pretty cool.

This looks like some sort of mangled monstrous combination of a collectible card game, a board game and an MMO. And, for once for all of those things, it looks genuinely fun.

I wish they had a beta sign up. :(

Also, trailer is awesome.

Ehh it is sooooo early and with such little tidbits of info that I am surprised it attracted your attention RF.

I am not sure I will remember it by the time it comes out.

There are a shitton of them...

A few in Kongregate as well, where you either find or buy cards, then fight other players.

This one it's notable is being done by one of the original crew of Irrational Games. From the site profile:

Jonathan Chey
Game designer and programmer. Co-founder of Irrational Games, director of development on BioShock, producer of System Shock 2 and designer of Freedom Force. Cut his chops at Looking Glass where he worked on Thief and Flight Unlimited 2, and wrote 5 lines of code for Terra Nova

The team in general is COOL. http://www.cardhunter.com/team/ highlights include Magic creator Richard Garfield and Captain Forever designer Farbs.

Also something from their game info that'll prove to trump say, Scrolls by Mojang:

  • It’s free to play and you win cards by playing the game, not by buying expensive booster pack

The only one???

The only worthwhile one for the reasons Tilla laid out.

Oh good grief... I could see this game taking up a whole lot of my time, especially if there are cooperative multiplayer modes. Just from the short gameplay in the trailer it is just gripping the CCG part of me...

I'm going to have to keep an eye on this

Thanks Tilla. I'm officially in full support of this project now.

EDIT: Wait, it's not entirely free.

Are those adventure modules going to be purchasable with ingame cash or do you have to use real money to buy them?

There will be a large number of adventures that will be free. There will probably also be some that you have to pay (real money) for.

They have to make money some way.

Color me interested, at least.

Agreed. It's at least five times better than booster packs.

Also, I've been hoping for a good TBS for some time. I'm just hoping for a lot of playable characters :D In the mean time, you guys, feel free to browse through warning tvtropes link.

Frankly I've seen games where they did let you "buy" cards... but it was reasonable, albiet takes a bit, to get them through gameplay.

Oh yeah, I've seen plenty of these. But most of them had a limitation: frustrating as it might be to get them through gameplay, a lot of the cards were purchase-only.

I'm going to keep a very close eye on this one... And normally I wouldn't do this, but I might go for the open beta they seem to be promising. Normally I don't go for that for various reasons such as lackluster computer performance and lack of hardware savvy.

Of course on the other end there were games where you could earn just about anything through gameplay... but it was actually almost outright unreasonable to. Bound Online was a lot like that... Getting decent parts, so you can get more parts, took forever!
