Cages can't be reused
« on: September 03, 2006, 06:16:00 pm »

After I've placed an animal in a cage, tamed it and it walks off the map, the cage is constantly flashing two types of refuse and no longer classifies as an 'empty' cage.

How did it get out of the cage at all?  Is there a way to un-assign animals to cages?

The only way I've found to get an animal out of a cage is to build a lever, attach it to the (built, ie placed) cage, and pull the lever.  That frees the contents, and puts the cage one tile to the side, ready to be moved back to the animal stockpile.

It is however expensive in terms of mechanic man-hours to do that, just to get a creature out of a cage.  If there isn't one already, there SHOULD be a simple "empty cage" command.

'Build' the cage somewhere, pick 'Assign' and toggle the animal's assignment to the cage. Someone will come by and let it go.

The bug might be related to the shells and bones in the child bag, though those were probably from feedings.  I'm not sure how you got refuse inside your cage.  Was it turtle shell/bones?

I have two cages that somehow managed to have a plump helmet spawn inside them. I think I tried installing them, then "releasing" the spawn the usual way. They were promptly returned to another set of cages.

That or another two spawn snuck their way into a cages.

Indeed it is turtle shell/bones, which I think they were feeding to whatever animal was in the cage.
